Chiamaka begins the COVID-19 lockdown alone in Maryland, where isolation drives her into painful reflections on her past relationships with Darnell, the Englishman, and Chuka. Across Washington DC, her best friend Zikora goes into labor after her partner Kwame abandons her the moment she reveals her pregnancy, forcing her to give birth with only her mother present. Their shared housekeeper and friend Kadiatou is raped by a hotel guest in DC, launching a legal battle that strips her of dignity and ends without justice when the prosecution drops all charges. Meanwhile in Abuja, Chia's cousin Omelogor faces her own reckoning when Aunty Jane accuses her of merely pretending to enjoy her unconventional, unmarried life, just as COVID locks Nigeria down around her. The four women's stories converge on the moment Chia brings Kadi the devastating legal verdict, only to find Kadi and her daughter Binta celebrating rather than grieving. This closing scene reframes the entire novel's meditation on happiness, suggesting that contentment lives in the present rather than in the past or in outcomes the world denies.

This pool traces the quieter but consequential events that give each woman's story its texture and depth. In Chia's section, key moments include Darnell's contemptuous refusal to meet her parents and the Copenhagen trip that exposes how little he respects her, followed by Aunty Jane's pressure on Chia to abandon her dreams of love in favor of IVF. Zikora's story gains dimension through her tearful phone call to Chia at age thirty-one and her first joyful meeting with Kwame at a cookbook launch, bookended by Kadi's quiet act of care in braiding Zikora's hair during the pregnancy and Zikora's defiant naming of her son Chidera. Kadi's backstory unfolds through the death of her father in a rock slide, Amadou's long-awaited return to Nigeria, and the discovery of his secret child in Texas that fractures her trust in him. The pool closes on the escalating media attack on Kadi's character after the hotel assault, capturing how institutional and public cruelty compound the violence she has already suffered. Together these events show how deeply each woman's present circumstances are shaped by losses, disappointments, and small acts of solidarity accumulated over years.

This pool collects the pivotal moments of revelation and rupture across all four storylines. In Chia's arc, she discovers Darnell's infidelity and takes him back anyway, while Omelogor's direct warning goes unheeded — a pattern of self-betrayal that haunts the novel's present. Zikora's hospital room becomes a space of unexpected confession, as she discloses her long-hidden abortion to her mother and learns that her mother too has kept devastating secrets for decades. Kadi's story is defined by violence survived and concealed: the cutting ritual of her girlhood, her rape by a restaurant boss she never reported, and then the hotel assault whose aftermath she must face publicly. The mechanics of Kadi's pursuit of asylum in America introduce a painful irony, as the fictional rape narrative Amadou prepares for her mirrors the real assault she has already buried in silence. Omelogor's section turns on her recognition, during the last dinner before lockdown, that the life she has built is genuinely her own. The pool closes with Chia and Zikora sharing their first meal outside since lockdown ended, the phrase dream count naming what each woman has been doing all along: tallying the lives they lived and the ones they only imagined.

The key discoveries, confessions, and decisions that pivot each woman's story toward its outcome.
