Garrett's early days in Salish are defined by his ailing father and his tentative, charged interactions with Cece in the weeks before the wedding. In the novel's middle section, Garrett's fieldwork tracking wolverines reflects his commitment to conservation, while Cece struggles to find meaning through part-time work and motherhood in rural Montana. Jasper's pacemaker surgery introduces a vulnerability that will shadow his adolescence, and small but significant moments—Lana's near-miss with a car and the secret she and Jasper stumble upon in the basement—reveal how deeply the parents' choices ripple into the children's lives. As the characters age, Cece's quiet visit to a nursing home memory care unit foreshadows her own future with devastating precision, and Jasper's commune episode exposes the full extent of his desperation. The pool closes with the novel's final chapter, in which Garrett officiates the very wedding that set everything in motion, offering an imagined vision of a future that unfolds very differently than he predicts.

It opens with the bachelor party's unexpected midnight swim and the frantic second email that bookend Garrett's act of confessing his love, before a college flashback to the friendship pact that makes his eventual betrayal of Charlie so weighty. The middle section tracks the hidden truths surfacing across decades: Charlie's inability to move on from Cece, the teenagers' accidental discovery of a charged embrace, and Cece's affair with Charlie quietly coming to light years after it happens. At the friends' reunion, Charlie's drunken confrontation and confession begin the long-overdue process of reconciliation between the two men. The discovery of the dead wolverine, Cece's Alzheimer's diagnosis, and the revelation of a kept wedding ring each mark the characters' hard-won acceptance of loss, mortality, and the irreversible cost of choices made long ago.
