Lynnea's classroom battles and her uncomfortable encounter with Jake Bonza reveal just how little support she has. Spurgeon and Ray test each other at the roadside and at the March before things turn violent. The later stories capture Dina's first crack of openness with Heidi, Tia's resourcefulness and near-exploitation, a violent night in a Tokyo apartment, and finally Doris's second failed plea for permission to join the movement.

It begins with Daphne's unexplained gift to Laurel, then moves through Clareese's decision to reach out to Cleophus and the moment she refuses to turn back after hurting him. Lynnea's brief classroom breakthrough and the careless words she says to Sheba reveal how close she comes to real connection before losing it. Spurgeon's witness of Ray's cruelty toward Lupita and his near-tears at the train station expose the wound beneath his composure. Dina's fabricated therapy confessions and her failure to comfort Heidi show how far she remains from genuine openness. The pool closes with Tia's invisible anonymity in Atlanta, Dina's desperate survival calculations in Japan, and Doris finally outgrowing the limits set by her church and her community.
