As teenagers, Percy discovers a talent for writing that Sam alone fully appreciates, and the two develop rituals that anchor their summers together. Their reunion as adults is charged with the weight of all the years apart, and each small moment — an old box of unwatched movies, a failed swim, a panic attack at a wake — reveals how deeply both of them have been shaped by their time together. The people around them, from Sam's protective friends to his observant brother Charlie, reflect the impact their broken relationship had on everyone involved. When the truth about the past finally surfaces, it is not just Percy and Sam who must reckon with it, but the entire network of relationships quietly torn apart over twelve years. When Sam leaves early for college and his communication breaks down, Percy's loneliness and hurt make her vulnerable to his older brother Charlie's growing attention. The single night Percy spends with Charlie sends shockwaves through her inner world and her closest friendships for the next twelve years, fueling recurring panic attacks and an inability to form real connections.
