When the family arrives in Tennessee, Trey immerses himself in public school life for the first time, joining Kaylee's Albion Pond club and forming friendships that feel unexpectedly real. Once in Boxelder, small revelations accumulate: an ethics class vote he cannot bring himself to cast, a secondhand compliment that turns out to be about his dad's fake car, and an email trail that leads back to his own sister. Each of these moments chips away at his inherited worldview, replacing his father's rationalizations with Trey's own growing convictions about honesty and loyalty. The confrontation with Arianna and the swelling momentum of the con force Trey to recognize that family loyalty cannot excuse the harm his family causes others. By the time he walks away from everything his father built, Trey has not just destroyed a car—he has dismantled the false belief system that kept him complicit for years.
