Memorial Medical Center becomes trapped when Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters disable its generators, leaving staff unable to care for the most critically ill patients. Faced with a slow and chaotic evacuation, doctors make the drastic decision to put the weakest patients last in line, then ultimately inject a group of them with lethal doses of morphine and sedatives. After the final evacuation, disaster teams return to find 45 bodies scattered throughout the building. A forensic investigation links the suspicious deaths to massive overdoses of morphine and the sedative Versed. Dr. Anna Pou is arrested and charged with second-degree murder, touching off a national debate about medical ethics in disasters. The case ends without conviction when a grand jury declines to indict Pou on any charge.

The headline story of Memorial's five-day disaster and its legal aftermath.

Shortly after opening, Memorial hospital suffers significant basement flooding during a record-setting rainstorm.

About 600 staff members arrive at Memorial with hurricane supplies as Katrina approaches the city.

Air conditioning shuts off throughout the hospital and nurses train box fans on patients to provide relief.

Nursing manager Mulderick orders workers to board up shattered windows and relocate staff from the surgery annex.

Community relations manager Sandra Cordray contacts Tenet Healthcare for emergency help and is essentially told Memorial is on its own.

Patient Helen Breckenridge is moved from the ICU for evacuation, then returned upstairs, where she soon dies.

The Coast Guard offers to evacuate LifeCare ventilator patients overnight, but Dr. Deichmann asks them to wait until daybreak.

A false alarm about rescue boats sends exhausted patients shuffling downstairs only to trudge back up empty-handed.

Vera LeBlanc's daughter Sandra arrives by airboat and carries her mother out of the hospital over staff objections.

A police boat arrives at Memorial to investigate a looting report, finds a false alarm, and departs.

LifeCare staff are told their patients will not be evacuated and are forced to abandon them and leave.

Tenet Healthcare abruptly lays off all Memorial staff shortly after the disaster with minimal compensation.

Attorney General Foti holds a press conference declaring the Memorial deaths plain-and-simple homicide.

Nurses Landry and Budo testify before the grand jury that they injected patients with morphine and midazolam.

The class-action lawsuit against Memorial and Tenet is settled for $25 million with no admission of wrongdoing.

Before the storm even arrives, Memorial's long history of basement flooding and its understaffed corporate owner foreshadow the chaos to come. As Katrina knocks out power and flooding isolates the hospital, staff scramble to triage patients and beg outside agencies for help, but Tenet Healthcare proves slow and disorganized in coordinating rescue. Individual dramas play out amid the crisis, from patients moved only to die anyway, to a daughter who forces her mother's rescue by airboat, to LifeCare staff ordered to abandon their patients entirely. After the disaster, Tenet abruptly fires all Memorial employees while the attorney general stages a dramatic public accusation and key witnesses testify before a grand jury. The legal saga concludes not with criminal conviction but with a civil settlement carrying no admission of wrongdoing.

The surrounding crises, individual struggles, and institutional failures that shaped the disaster.

Plant operations director Yancovich concludes that Memorial's basement generators will fail in a major flood and urges evacuation.

A memo circulates declaring Memorial in survival mode after a nearby canal is reported breached.

A new triage numbering system is established prioritizing the most mobile patients first and the most critical patients last.

A DNR patient's daughter protests that she did not know making her mother a DNR meant do not rescue.

Nursing director Mulderick's request about increasing morphine doses is misinterpreted by Dr. Deichmann as a suggestion for euthanasia, which he flatly refuses.

Dr. Pou speaks with Dr. Cook, who explains how to administer a drug cocktail that would help critical patients go to sleep and die.

Dr. Kathleen Fournier loudly protests the euthanasia plan; Dr. Bryant King texts his family that evil entities are discussing killing patients.

LifeCare assistant administrator Diane Robichaux tearfully tells her staff their patients are not going to be evacuated and will not leave.

Investigators learn from two LifeCare witnesses that Dr. Pou directly told them lethal was her intention.

Investigators realize that a direct rooftop path from the seventh floor to the helipad had been available but was never used.

Coroner Minyard declines to rule the deaths homicides and tells investigators he had to consider what was best for his city.

Dr. Thiele ignores severe abdominal pain during his legal ordeal, is later hospitalized with advanced colon cancer, and miraculously recovers.

The National Academy of Medicine declares that neither law nor ethics supports intentional hastening of death even in a crisis.

This pool traces the chain of warnings, realizations, and choices that pushed Memorial's staff from patient advocates to suspected killers. Infrastructure warnings are ignored, survival mode is declared, and a new triage system displaces the sickest patients to the back of the evacuation line, with one family's protest cutting to the heart of what that decision truly meant. Objections are raised and overruled as Dr. Pou quietly prepares to administer lethal injections, and the final conscious victim's cheerful question underscores the human cost. Investigators later uncover that an easier evacuation route had existed all along and that witnesses heard Pou describe her intentions as lethal. The legal system ultimately bends to political pressure, and the medical community absorbs an unsettled reckoning—leaving questions of triage, euthanasia, and emergency ethics unresolved.

The pivotal decisions, moral confrontations, and discoveries that defined the tragedy.
