Shori wakes injured and amnesiac in a dark cave, killing and eating a nearby animal to survive.

Shori discovers burned ruins on a mountainside and feels a strong, mysterious connection to the destroyed buildings.

Wright Hamlin stops his car beside Shori on a road; she bites him and he lets her drink his blood.

Wright takes Shori to his cabin, where she slowly relearns basic knowledge and secretly bites a neighbor named Theodora.

Shori realizes the animal she killed in the cave was actually a human man, and she feels deeply remorseful.

A gunman shoots Shori during a visit to the ruins; she forces Wright to leave while she recovers alone.

Shori meets her father, Iosif Petrescu, at the ruins; he calls her by name and explains the Ina species.

Iosif reveals that 78 Ina were burned alive at the ruins, including Shori's mothers, sisters, and their symbionts.

Shori finds Iosif's compound burned to rubble and discovers her father, brother, and their symbionts have all been murdered.

Gunmen attack Iosif's second house with gasoline; Shori fights them off and the group flees into the night.

The group travels to Northern California and is cautiously received by the Gordon family at their hidden compound.

The Gordon compound is attacked; Shori kills several invaders and captures a surviving attacker named Victor.

Victor's questioning under Shori's compulsion leads the group to identify the Silk family as behind the murders.

The Council of Judgment convenes; Shori testifies about her story and the Silks deny all involvement in the murders.

Katharine Dahlman rejects her punishment, charges Shori with a rifle, and is killed after Shori tears out her throat.

Shori Matthews wakes injured and amnesiac in a cave with no idea she is a vampire-like creature called an Ina. A young man named Wright helps her investigate her past, leading her to discover that her entire family was burned alive by unknown attackers. After briefly reuniting with her father and brother, Shori learns they too have been murdered, forcing her to flee with the few survivors she can protect. She seeks refuge with the Gordon family in California, where another attack leads her to identify the Silk family as the ones behind the murders. A formal Ina trial called a Council of Judgment finds the Silks guilty, and when a Silk ally named Katharine Dahlman rejects her sentence and attacks Shori, Shori kills her and finally achieves justice for her family.

The core story of Shori's survival, discovery, and fight for justice.

Shori searches the burned ruins and finds clothes to cover her naked body before leaving the site.

Wright shows Shori how to browse the internet; she reads vampire folklore and finds misleading news about the ruins.

Shori tracks and bites the gunman who shot her, leaving a message through him for the vampire who compelled him.

Shori and Wright search the ruins and discover a golden bird necklace, which Shori immediately claims and puts on.

Wright confronts Shori about his lack of free will and his jealousy toward the future symbionts she will need.

Shori visits people she previously bit on Wright's street and releases them from their bite bonds.

Shori finds Brook and Celia, two surviving symbionts, alive in the rubble of Iosif's burned compound.

Celia attacks Shori in the rubble, believing Shori is responsible for the fire because she killed Hugh Tang.

Brook recalls that Shori's prospective mate Daniel Gordon and his family live somewhere in Northern California.

Shori visits Theodora to explain the situation before departing for California, and Theodora gives her money to help the group.

Preston Gordon asks Shori to take a young Black man named Joel into her growing symbiont family.

Gordon sons Wayne and Manning promise Shori they will travel north to settle her finances and bring Theodora south.

Representatives from thirteen Ina families arrive at the Gordon compound to attend the Council of Judgment proceedings.

Shori questions Russell Silk's younger, unmated son before the Council, sensing he is lying about his family's innocence.

The Gordon sons behead and burn Katharine Dahlman's body, completing the execution as is the host family's duty.

While Shori's main quest is survival and justice, her journey is built on smaller but vital moments of discovery and connection. Early on, she pieces together clues about her past by searching the ruins and using the internet, and she leaves a carefully planned message for the vampire who ordered her shooting. After losing her father and brother, she must persuade surviving symbionts Brook and Celia to trust her, then convince the skeptical Gordon family to shelter her. Her growing community expands when Joel joins her family and Theodora finally comes to stay at the compound. The Council of Judgment draws in new allies and enemies alike, and even in its final moments, justice must be enforced through the Gordons' execution of Katharine Dahlman.

The key encounters and decisions that shaped Shori's journey.

Shori remembers she is the result of a genetic experiment; her dark skin was engineered to protect her from sunlight.

Iosif reveals that Shori is 53 years old but still considered a prepubescent child by Ina standards.

Iosif reveals that the man Shori killed in the cave was his symbiont Hugh Tang, sent to search for survivors.

Shori and Wright fly to Iosif's compound, where Shori meets her brother Stefan and learns about her three mothers.

Shori feeds from Brook and Celia to save their lives, despite switching Ina hosts being uncomfortable and unnatural for everyone.

Wright suggests to the Gordons that the murders were racially motivated; the Gordons firmly and proudly reject this idea.

Shori drinks from Joel for the first time and formally claims him as her own symbiont.

Shori learns that her female Ina venom is powerful enough to supernaturally compel another Ina to die.

Shori meets Joan and Margaret Braithwaite, who share Ina history with her and offer to take her into their family.

Daniel Gordon tells Shori that he and his brothers still intend to mate with her when she comes of age.

During the Council proceedings, Milo Silk calls Shori a contemptuous name, openly exposing the Silks' racist motivations.

Theodora is found dead at the compound; Shori investigates and traces the murder to Katharine Dahlman's symbiont Jack Roan.

Shori formally challenges Katharine Dahlman before the Council, resulting in Katharine's removal as the Silks' advocate.

The Council majority votes the Silks guilty; Russell Silk verbally attacks Shori before his family grudgingly accepts disbandment.

Shori wakes recovering from her wounds and stops herself from attacking Wright, proving her emotional and mental growth.

Shori's story is driven by a series of revelations that reshape her understanding of herself and the world around her. She learns she is a genetic experiment whose dark skin gives her a crucial survival advantage over other Ina, and that she unknowingly killed one of her own family's people in her amnesiac state. Meeting her father and brother briefly restores a sense of belonging before they are taken from her, deepening her resolve to protect those who remain. At the Gordon compound, Wright voices what the evidence suggests — that racism drove the murders — while Shori discovers her own biological power to compel other Ina to die. The Council of Judgment forces the Silks' hatred into the open and culminates in Shori losing Theodora and killing Katharine, before waking to find she is finally strong enough to protect her family even from herself.
