Eammon heals the wound on Red's cheek by taking the cut onto himself, then warns her not to bleed on the sentinel trees.

Red and Eammon encounter a shadow woman emerging from a breach beneath a rotted sentinel, and Eammon uses his blood to seal it.

Eammon proposes a thread bond, a folk marriage meant to help him assist Red with controlling her dangerous magic.

The Wilderwood erupts into Red's bedroom and destroys it entirely, forcing her to sleep in Eammon's bedchamber.

After Queen Isla dies, Neve is crowned Queen and appoints Kiri as High Priestess of the new Order of the Five Shadows.

Red and Eammon travel to the Edge, a city at the Wilderwood's northern border, where residents welcome them as the Wolves.

Red lends Eammon her power, and together they successfully heal Bormain, a villager severely infected with shadow rot.

Red confronts Eammon while he is being drained by the Wilderwood and refuses to let him sacrifice himself alone.

Red returns to Valleyda and discovers the shrine packed with inverted, blood-marked sentinels stolen from the Wilderwood.

Trapped in a dungeon, Red calls for the Wilderwood's roots, claims her full power as a Wolf, and destroys her prison.

To battle Solmir in the final confrontation, Eammon pulls the Wilderwood's magic out of Red and takes it all into himself.

Red asks Eammon to share the roots again, and they divide the Wilderwood's magic between them, both becoming its Wolves.

Red enters the Wilderwood as a reluctant sacrifice and discovers that Eammon, the Wolf she was taught to fear, is actually the forest's beleaguered guardian. She agrees to form a thread bond with him and slowly learns that her own blood carries power capable of defending the Wilderwood against the rot creeping in from the Shadowlands. While Red grows into her role at the Black Keep, Neve's desperate efforts to free her sister are unknowingly destroying the sentinels that hold back the darkness. Red returns to Valleyda to stop Neve, is imprisoned by Kiri and Solmir, and in the dungeon finally claims her full power by calling for the Wilderwood's roots. In the climactic battle, Eammon and Red face Solmir's ritual to release the remaining Kings, and ultimately divide the forest's magic between them as equal guardians, though the victory costs them Neve.

Red helps bandage Eammon's wounds and successfully controls her magic to transfer some of his pain onto herself.

Queen Isla dies, and Neve begins conducting secret blood rituals with Kiri in the palace shrine to draw power from the Shadowlands.

Red and Eammon share a kiss after defeating a shadow creature near a breach at the forest's edge.

Red shouts at the Wilderwood that Eammon never chose his fate, and the sentient forest pauses to consider this argument.

Lyra returns Red's repaired cloak, now embroidered with gold thread and reshaped into a bridal cloak.

Red arrives back in Valleyda feeling like a stranger and notices that Arick behaves coldly and casts no shadow.

Arick willingly presses his own throat against Red's knife to sever his bond with Solmir and halt the ritual.

Neve wakes in a gray, colorless place and is greeted by a man who says he has been waiting for her.

Red's transformation from sacrificial Second Daughter into Lady Wolf is built on a series of significant secondary moments, beginning the day Neve gifts her the scarlet cloak and Red sets foot inside the Wilderwood. Red meets her fellow guardians Lyra and Fife, completes the thread bond ritual with Eammon, and slowly learns to control her dangerous magic while her feelings for him deepen. In Valleyda, Queen Isla's death removes the last restraint on Neve's collaboration with Kiri, accelerating their blood rituals with consequences Red can only watch through a mirror. Back in the Wilderwood, Red and Eammon share a first kiss, and her cloak is returned transformed into a bridal garment signaling her changed identity. The pool closes with Arick's devastating sacrifice and Neve's disappearance into the Shadowlands, where a stranger already waits for her.

Red wakes in a dungeon and discovers the real Arick is also a prisoner there, separated from the man wearing his face.

It begins with the secret night four years before the narrative, when Red first acquired her shard of dangerous magic, and moves through her discoveries about Eammon's true identity and the real history of the Five Kings and the Binding. Red's growing understanding of the Wilderwood's nature reaches a crisis when she sees Neve's blood rituals in the mirror and chooses to return to Valleyda, where she is captured and confronted by Solmir with the knowledge of what she must do. Armed with this understanding, Red chooses to accept the Wilderwood's roots and transforms from a reluctant sacrifice into a true guardian by her own free will. The pool closes with the aftermath of the final battle, Neve's burial into the Shadowlands, and Red's transformed Mark signaling the bargain she freely chose to make.
