Journalist Mahmoud is drawn deeper into the orbit of his editor Saidi, finding himself elevated in the magazine while also becoming entangled with dangerous figures including the film director Nawal and Saidi's shadowy connections. The neighborhood's old guard, represented by hotel owner Abu Anmar, gradually surrenders to the opportunistic Faraj, as ordinary residents like Hadi become targets of institutional violence they cannot fight back against. Saidi's sudden disappearance and the hints that the Whatsitsname may be rooted in Hadi's personal grief begin unraveling everything Mahmoud thought he understood about the story. The novel's secondary threads close with each character displaced, injured, or quietly expelled from the city they once called home.

The Whatsitsname's crisis of identity deepens as his followers fracture violently and he grows uncertain whether his mission is righteous or merely an endless cycle of vengeance and survival. Each major character is forced to confront a truth they would prefer to avoid: Mahmoud discovers his past has followed him to Baghdad, Elishva finally accepts a surrogate for her lost son, and the narrator realizes that his investigation has placed him in serious danger. The machinery of government, as embodied by Majid's astrologer-driven department, proves both more fragile and more destructive than any character suspected. The story's moral ambiguity reaches its peak when Mahmoud receives Saidi's extraordinary email and refuses to either confirm or condemn it, choosing a gray area as the novel's most honest possible response. These turning points collectively show how impossible it is to fix truth, guilt, or redemption in a city where identity itself is constantly being assembled and disassembled.
