Back at the front, Captain Clark's fatal order during a desperate battle drives Fry to shoot him, leaving the narrator and Broadbent as the sole survivors of their unit. After looting the deserted town of Arras and fighting in the Battle of Amiens, the narrator is wounded and sent home by hospital ship. The novel closes with a devastating revelation that the generals manipulated the troops with propaganda before the final battle.

The major turning points of one soldier's war.

At the latrine, the narrator discovers a rotting human foot still inside an abandoned boot.

Brown retrieves a pair of boots left near the latrine and quietly claims them as his own.

On the hospital train, a wounded German officer angrily demands to be moved away from the common soldiers' car.

Before the parades begin, the recruits spend their last Montreal night in the red-light district, foreshadowing the reckless self-medication that will mark their time at war. In the trenches, the narrator's first sentry duty and grim discoveries—a rotting foot in a boot, a corpse in a swimming stream—reveal how quickly the war strips away innocence. The men's rest periods offer no true respite, as fatigues, drills, and the constant shadow of return to the front define their time away from fighting. Secondary characters shape the narrative: Broadbent's steady leadership after Brown's death, Cleary's fatal wounding after the raid, and Renaud's suffering under Clark all highlight the human cost of officer indifference. The narrator's relationship with Gladys in London and the encounter with a German officer demanding class privilege on a hospital train expose the war's deep class divides. These quieter moments accumulate into a portrait of institutional failure and the everyday dehumanization of common soldiers.

An Anglican curate enthusiastically praises troop morale over tea, revealing how little civilians understand the frontline reality.

Germans charge the occupied trench in waves while singing, and the narrator's unit begins running dangerously low on ammunition.

A brigadier general tells the troops the Llandovery Castle was torpedoed by Germans, urging them to take ruthless vengeance.

Young German soldiers huddled in a shell crater beg the Canadians for mercy but are shot and killed.

The narrator waits helplessly with Broadbent as he bleeds out from a near-severed leg, crying for his mother.

Carried up the gangplank, the narrator is haunted by guilt over the surrendering German soldiers he helped kill.

From the moment the narrator feels sudden dread at the Montreal parade, the novel traces a psychological unraveling that moves from idealism to trauma. The first bombardment breaks him emotionally, and subsequent horrors—including witnessing Cleary's death and suffering flashbacks after killing Karl—reveal a man being reshaped by combat into someone he no longer recognizes. His disillusionment with God, with officers, and with the civilians at home accumulates through key turning points: the 'generals die in bed' remark, Gladys's dismissal of his guilt, and the curate's clueless optimism about troop morale. The final act of the novel transforms the soldiers from disillusioned fighters into instruments of propaganda, with the brigadier general's speech about the Llandovery Castle driving them to refuse mercy to surrendering Germans. Broadbent's death and the narrator's wounding mark the physical culmination of the war's destruction, while the gangplank scene closes the novel on a note of moral reckoning. The narrator is carried home haunted not only by what was done to him, but by what he was manipulated into doing.
