King Midas manipulates his ally Fulke into risking his army by dangling access to Auren, his prized golden captive. When Midas formally offers Auren to Fulke at a royal banquet, Auren defies both kings for the very first time. A messenger then exposes Midas's true scheme: Fulke's army was sacrificed as a ruse so Midas could seize Fifth Kingdom unopposed. After Fulke is killed, Midas expands his empire while Auren is summoned on a perilous mountain journey to rejoin him. Snow pirates attack the caravan and seize Auren along with the other saddles, placing her in the brutal hands of Captain Fane. Her situation worsens further when the mysterious Commander Rip acquires her from Fane, just as Midas learns of her capture and vows war.

Before the violence erupts, the novel establishes the grim textures of Auren's daily captivity — her gilded cage, her petrified pet bird Coin, her hidden ribbons, and her uneasy relationships with the other saddles. The tensions of Midas's court are quietly building, from Rissa's desperate performances for the lustful kings to Queen Malina's cold warning to Auren to stay in her place. When Auren finally leaves the castle, she encounters the shocking poverty of Highbell City and the grotesque warning that King Ravinger has pinned to the city walls. On the mountain road, Auren forges a bond with the guard Sail, but the caravan is left vulnerable when Digby scouts ahead and snow pirates strike. Auren's story begins with a rescue that became a trap: Midas saved her as a child and used his gold touch to claim her body, ensuring she would never truly be free. The cracks in her loyalty deepen when she realizes Midas genuinely intends to trade her, and her first small acts of defiance — wrapping her ribbons for modesty, calling Midas by his real name — each invite swift punishment. After Fulke's death, Midas nearly recaptures her trust with a tender apology, but the tears she sheds alone that night reveal a truth she cannot yet name. On the road, Auren discovers Midas's neglect of his kingdom's starving poor and tastes real friendship for the first time, both of which accelerate her awakening. Captain Fane's brutality finally breaks her open, driving her to reveal her ribbons and then unleash her own gold-touch ability in a defining act of protection. The novel closes with Auren under yet another man's power — but now carrying the dangerous secret of what she truly is.
