Sloane, convinced that Nina slept with her husband, sets a violent plan in motion that leads to a fatal case of mistaken identity. Early revelations — Sloane recognizing her unequal marriage, Priscilla offering an alternative publishing path, and Nina admitting her secret attractions — establish the internal pressures building beneath the surface.
