Charlie begins the novel recovering from a suicide attempt at Creeley Center, a group home for girls who self-harm, where trauma has left her temporarily mute. Prematurely discharged due to lack of insurance, she travels to Tucson to stay near her friend Mikey, finding a dishwashing job and her own apartment. Despite her progress, she falls into a destructive relationship with Riley, a drug-addicted cook ten years her senior, and begins buying drugs for him. When her friend Blue visits and then learns of a fellow Creeley resident's death, chaos erupts—Blue relapses, Wendy destroys Charlie's apartment, and Charlie covers herself in broken glass in despair. Her coworkers Linus and Tanner rescue her and bring her to their grandfather Felix's home in New Mexico to heal. The secondary events of the novel trace Charlie's daily struggles, from her time at Creeley Center through her life in Tucson and eventual recovery. In the group home, Louisa offers Charlie wordless comfort while painful warnings about their capacity to be loved plant seeds of self-doubt that haunt Charlie throughout the story. Charlie arrives in Tucson equipped with coping skills but also a restocked tender kit, and her relationship with Riley grows complicated as she discovers the depth of his addiction and covers for him. Small acts of connection—a coworker's trust, her tenants' gratitude for her drawings, and her art being accepted into a gallery—offer glimpses of a different kind of life. While Charlie heals in New Mexico, Blue rebuilds their shared apartment, and True Grit reopens with Riley sent to rehabilitation. By the novel's end, Charlie and Blue have joined a support group and built a genuine friendship, and news of Frank's arrest and Evan's sobriety signals that the wider world is slowly shifting toward healing.

The smaller moments that shape Charlie's path from Creeley to recovery.

Pool 3 follows the pivotal moments that force Charlie to confront who she is and what she wants. From the early revelation that she carries guilt over Ellis's brain damage to her recognition that Riley shares her late father's kind but troubled eyes, Charlie begins to understand the patterns driving her self-destruction. Her time in Tucson is shaped by small but significant shifts—a job interview confession that earns her trust, free art classes she ultimately lets slip away, and the shock of Mikey's marriage that sends her spiraling. Riley's discovery of her tender kit strips away the emotional distance he kept from her reality, and his refusal to see her as a full person becomes impossible to ignore. Felix's philosophy of reassembling the pieces of a shattered self gives Charlie a framework for her pain, and reading Louisa's notebooks finally unlocks her ability to tell her own story through a comic. Riley's performance of a song he wrote about her provides the closure she needs to move forward.

The key decisions and discoveries that change Charlie's understanding of herself.
