Augie stays behind at the Barbeau Observatory as the Air Force evacuates all other personnel, accepting the likelihood of dying alone in the Arctic.

Augie discovers a girl named Iris apparently left behind during the evacuation and reluctantly takes her in as a companion.

Mission Control on Earth goes silent without warning, leaving the Aether crew without contact during their return journey from Jupiter.

Augie shoots a wolf that approaches Iris during their walk to the observatory hangar, killing it despite its seemingly gentle behavior.

Augie falls seriously ill with a fever at the observatory while Iris remains at his side.

The Aether's primary communications dish breaks free from the ship's hull and floats away, eliminating the crew's last means of reaching Earth.

Augie plans a trip to Lake Hazen after finding a weather station with more powerful radio equipment marked on an Arctic atlas.

Sully and Devi complete a successful preparatory space walk to set up the broken antenna site for final repairs.

Augie drives the snowmobile into a hidden boulder, destroying it and stranding himself and Iris far from the observatory.

Augie and Iris reach Lake Hazen on foot and settle into the abandoned weather station's tents and plentiful supplies.

Devi dies in open space when her suit develops a carbon dioxide problem that the crew notices far too late to save her.

Augie uses the Lake Hazen radio hut and makes his first contact with Sully, an astronaut aboard the incoming Aether.

The Aether docks with the International Space Station and the crew finds it abandoned, with only one Soyuz reentry pod remaining.

Augie recognizes Iris was a figment of his imagination, then walks to the lake and lies down beside a dying polar bear.

Thebes gives up his Soyuz seat so Sully can return to Earth, and Harper calls Sully by her first name, Iris.

The novel follows two isolated characters: Augie, an aging astrophysicist who stays alone at an Arctic observatory after a mysterious catastrophe, and Sully, an astronaut aboard the Aether returning from Jupiter as Earth falls silent. Augie reluctantly cares for Iris, a girl he believes was left behind during the evacuation, while the Aether crew descends into anxiety over their home planet's silence. A dangerous snowmobile journey brings Augie and Iris to Lake Hazen's weather station, while Sully and Devi undertake a series of space walks to restore the ship's broken communications dish. Tragedy strikes when Devi dies during the repair mission, and Augie and Sully eventually make radio contact across the enormous distance separating them. After the Aether docks with an abandoned space station, Thebes gives up his seat so Sully can return to Earth alongside Harper, who calls her by her true first name—Iris—revealing that she is Augie's long-lost daughter. The novel closes as Augie dies peacefully beside a dying polar bear and Sully descends toward an uncertain Earth.

The essential events that drive the story from beginning to end.

Augie recalls fleeing New Mexico after impregnating a doctoral student named Jean, who refused an abortion and raised the child alone.

Augie and Iris rearrange the observatory to meet their survival needs, discarding unnecessary equipment and consolidating food and essentials.

Harper gathers the crew to discuss the cause of Earth's silence, but no one can offer a plausible explanation.

Augie and Iris cover the dead wolf with snow, building a makeshift grave as Iris cries over its body.

Ivanov and Tal break into a brief physical fight after weeks of tension caused by Earth's continued silence.

Sully climbs into Devi's bunk and listens as Devi shares her deepening fears about the silence from Earth.

Sully asks Thebes how he avoids falling apart; he advises her to focus only on whatever she is doing in the present moment.

Augie finds Iris sitting outside in only her long underwear, watching musk oxen, yet completely unharmed by the Arctic cold.

Ivanov shows Sully the family photos covering his bunk walls, and they bond over having loved ones who don't understand their calling.

Devi tells Sully privately that Harper is in love with her, a fact Sully has not yet admitted to herself.

Devi wakes from a nightmare in which she and Sully lose the new antenna dish and themselves into open space.

Augie avoids the Lake Hazen radio hut for weeks, choosing to enjoy the present rather than face potentially unwelcome news.

Augie takes Iris fishing on the melting lake and smiles genuinely for the first time he can remember.

The crew gathers in Little Earth to hold a brief memorial for Devi after her death during the space walk.

Sully draws a short straw and prepares to remain permanently aboard the space station while the others return to Earth.

This pool covers the significant secondary events that give the main plot its emotional texture, tracing how both Augie and the Aether crew cope with isolation and loss. Augie's backstory of abandoning Jean Sullivan in New Mexico is established early, alongside the small daily acts of survival he and Iris undertake at the observatory. On the Aether, the crew's anxiety erupts in conflict and despair, prompting Sully to reach out to Devi and seek wisdom from Thebes about staying present. As the antenna repair mission draws near, Ivanov and Sully bond over their families' inability to understand their calling, and Devi's nightmare foreshadows the tragedy ahead. The aftermath of Devi's death and the quiet pleasures of Lake Hazen—fishing, cooking, and the first real smile Augie can remember—mark the emotional midpoint of the story. The pool closes with the crew's memorial for Devi and Sully drawing the short straw that appears to seal her fate aboard the space station.

The supporting moments that shaped each character's journey.

Augie feels fear, loneliness, and helplessness for the first time in years as Iris weeps over the wolf's body.

Sully observes Devi's alarming withdrawal from the crew and their work as Earth's silence drags on without explanation.

Augie experiences fevered dreams that force him to see himself through the eyes of women he abused and colleagues he cheated.

Augie recovers from fever and attempts physical activity but cannot work out the joy of survival alongside the weight of regret.

Augie spots the polar bear again after his illness and feels a strange kinship of loneliness, grateful for Iris's company rather than solitude.

Sully recalls her mother Jean becoming distant and absorbed in a new family after remarrying, deepening Sully's lifelong sense of abandonment.

Augie watches Iris imitate his cooking at the Lake Hazen station and feels something he imagines a father must feel: pride.

Augie lies awake listening for Iris's breathing at night and admits to himself that the fear he feels for her is love.

Sully retreats into depression and memory after Devi's death, reliving her divorce, her mother's passing, and her feelings of failure.

Sully looks around at her crewmates in Little Earth and realizes for the first time that these people have become her family.

Sully recognizes in Augie's voice her own stubborn loneliness and a craving for connection he does not know how to achieve.

Augie asks Iris where she came from and receives only a knowing look, finally accepting that she exists only in his imagination.

Sully lies next to Harper on the space station and acknowledges a reservoir of love for him that has never been touched.

Sully accepts that everything in her life, including every failure and every loss, led her to this moment as the Soyuz pod descends.

This pool follows the inner journey of Augie and Sully, tracing the key emotional shifts that carry both characters from isolation toward connection and redemption. Augie's encounter with the wolf and his subsequent fever force him to reckon with a lifetime of selfishness, and his growing attachment to Iris—culminating in quiet pride over her cooking and a nighttime admission of love—signals a profound change in a man who spent decades avoiding responsibility. Sully's arc is driven by memory and grief: her mother's emotional withdrawal, the weight of perceived failure as a mother, and the devastation of watching Devi die all pull her deeper into isolation before she finally begins to open up. The two protagonists briefly mirror each other when Sully hears her own loneliness in Augie's voice over the radio, and both reach resolution in the novel's final pages. Augie accepts Iris's imagined nature and surrenders peacefully to nature and love, while Sully releases her guilt, acknowledges her feelings for Harper, and accepts that everything in her life led her to this singular moment.
