The angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley have been living among humanity since the Garden of Eden, and when the infant Antichrist is accidentally placed with the wrong family, neither realizes their error for eleven years. When they finally discover that the real Antichrist, Adam Young, has grown up in the quiet English village of Lower Tadfield, Armageddon is already dangerously close. Adam befriends local occultist Anathema Device, who awakens his conscience to environmental destruction and the fragility of the world he loves. As portents of the apocalypse multiply and all parties converge on the Lower Tadfield Air Base, Adam and his friends confront and defeat the Four Horsepersons with crude homemade weapons. When Heaven and Hell's representatives demand the Final Battle proceed, Adam's refusal — backed by Aziraphale and Crowley's argument that his defiance may itself be part of the Divine Plan — causes both armies to stand down and saves the world.

While the Antichrist is placed with the wrong family, Aziraphale and Crowley spend years attempting to influence the life of the wrong child, Warlock Dowling, in a futile tug-of-war over his moral upbringing. The real Antichrist, Adam Young, grows up in peaceful Lower Tadfield, while other key players — young Anathema Device and the electronics-cursed Newton Pulsifer — are quietly introduced. As the final day approaches, the Four Horsepersons receive their apocalyptic tokens, Atlantis rises from the sea, and Newton reluctantly joins a witchfinder army and sets out for Lower Tadfield. When Crowley faces demonic punishment from Hell, he disposes of Ligur with holy water and traps Hastur in an answering machine, while Aziraphale vanishes after his call to Heaven goes badly wrong. The crisis at the air base is ultimately resolved not through magic or divine power, but through Newton's accidental gift for making technology fail at exactly the right moment, and the story ends with Agnes Nutter delivering one final surprise.

From the very beginning, seemingly small decisions carry enormous consequences: a scatterbrained nun's mix-up places the Antichrist with an ordinary English family, and years later Crowley's growing unease that their target child seems too normal signals something has gone badly wrong. As the final day nears, revelations accumulate — Agnes Nutter's ancient prophecies prove startlingly accurate, Lower Tadfield defies all logic by radiating love rather than evil, and nature itself begins to rebel with trees bursting through city streets and a kraken rising from the deep. Crowley's desperate drive through the flaming M25 and Madame Tracy's unexpected channeling of Aziraphale's displaced spirit both represent characters acting far beyond their ordinary limits. The flashback to Agnes Nutter's explosive execution reminds the reader that this prophecy has always been pointing here, to this moment, in this village. Ultimately it is the accumulation of these turning points — a child's conscience, his friends' loyalty, and an angel-in-a-medium's timely message — that steers the world away from annihilation and toward an ordinary Sunday morning.

The key decisions, surprising discoveries, and pivotal moments that steered the world away from annihilation.
