The novel opens with Hamnet discovering his twin sister Judith gravely ill with the plague and searching desperately for help from absent adults. Through an alternating timeline, readers learn how his parents — a Latin tutor's son and a healer named Agnes — met, fell in love, and married, building a family in Stratford while the father's career takes him increasingly to London. When Judith falls ill, the flea-borne plague originating in Alexandria has already reached the household, and Hamnet secretly vows to offer his own life to Death in exchange for his twin's. Agnes wakes to find the sacrifice complete — Hamnet is now the dying child — and no cure she knows can reverse what has happened. After the funeral, the father escapes grief by returning to his players in London, while Agnes remains in Stratford overwhelmed by loss and anger at his absence. Years later Agnes travels to London and watches the play her husband named after their dead son, finally recognizing his way of keeping Hamnet alive.

This pool follows the overlooked characters and secondary events that give the tragedy of Hamnet its full human weight. Agnes's origins are traced through her forest-dwelling mother Rowan's death, her hostile stepmother Joan, and her dramatic first encounter with the Latin tutor in a storehouse. The invisible chain of misfortune that brings plague to Judith is revealed, beginning with a cabin boy's chance friendship with a monkey in Alexandria and ending when a Stratford seamstress lets Judith open a box of infected Venetian beads. Around the central crisis, the household's supporting figures — Mary, Susanna, and an oblivious, distant father — each play roles that reveal what was missed and what was sacrificed. After Hamnet's death, his father becomes unfaithful and eventually buys the family a grander house, while Judith secretly prowls the dark searching for her twin's ghost. These moments show the grief that settles into everyday life long after the central tragedy has ended.

This pool traces the internal turning points and quiet revelations that invisibly determine the fate of Hamnet's family. Agnes's gifts — her ability to read people through their hands and her powerful foresight — define her confidence from childhood, even as those around her urge her to hide them. The decisive moment comes when Agnes recognizes her husband's melancholy as the result of living under his father's roof and chooses, painfully, to release him to London, not knowing that this separation will leave her alone when disaster strikes. During her labor with the twins, Agnes receives a letter that confirms her husband has been transformed by the playhouse, while she simultaneously fights against her own foresight that she was meant to have only two children. Hamnet's death strips Agnes of her healing identity and purpose, leaving her drifting in grief while her husband channels his sorrow into a great work of art. When Agnes finally reaches toward the stage during a performance of Hamlet, the boundary between her world and her husband's dissolves, and she understands the tribute he has made.
