The novel follows two timelines: Nikki Lovejoy-Berry's present-day visit to her estranged grandmother Mother Rita in North Carolina, and Luella Bobo's journey with a community of formerly enslaved people who build the Kingdom of the Happy Land in those same hills 150 years earlier. Nikki arrives at Mother Rita's home with no knowledge of her family's history and is slowly introduced to the story of Queen Luella, King William, and the community they created. The kingdom is founded after the community flees KKK violence in South Carolina, eventually purchasing over 200 acres to call their permanent home. In the present, Nikki discovers that Mother Rita has no legal claim to her ancestral land, is being evicted by the Thomas family, and has been given only months to live. The dual crises across timelines mirror each other: Luella's son Wade is convicted at trial and the kingdom loses its deed to a lawyer, while Mother Rita faces eviction through an exploited legal loophole. Both storylines reach resolution as Mother Rita wins four acres of land in court and Luella's family reclaims enough of the kingdom to live on.

Luella gives birth to her daughter in the kingdom, and the baby's love of sunshine earns her the nickname Sunny.

Papa dies during a period of household conflict, and Robert tells Luella she has come to him too late.

Nikki returns to Washington, DC and tells her mother the truth about visiting Mother Rita and the fight for the land.

The kingdom holds its final council meeting as Weaver forces all community members to vacate their homes.

Luella and Robert discover Weaver has raised the price to buy back the land, leaving them able to afford only 50 acres.

Mother Rita passes away after the court ruling, and Nikki inherits the land, dedicating herself to preserving the kingdom's legacy.

This pool focuses on the significant but often quieter events that shaped both Luella's life in the kingdom and Nikki's investigation into her family's history. In the past, Luella endures abuse from William, fights to build a school for her community, and works alongside other women to establish the kingdom's economy through liniment sales and other trades. Robert becomes king and grants the women a voice on the council, and the community grows before facing external harassment and internal heartbreak. In the present, Nikki gradually uncovers the truth about her family — finding documents at the library, hearing pieces of the story from neighbor Maddie, and eventually confronting the reality of the eviction — before returning to Washington, DC to tell her mother what she has discovered. Both timelines are marked by loss: in the past, Papa's death and Robert's departure fracture Luella's world, while in the present, Mother Rita's death closes one chapter of the family story. Together, these events form the emotional backbone of the novel, showing the price both women paid to hold their families and their land together.

The daily struggles and quiet turning points that shaped the kingdom and Nikki's journey.

Mama leads Nikki to a field of lavender and reveals that her full name Veronica came from Mother Rita's favorite flower.

This pool captures the pivotal decisions and discoveries that define the arcs of both Luella and Nikki. In the kingdom's early days, William's proposal to abandon voting and the community's joyful naming of their new home signal both the promise and the tensions that will shape their future, while Luella's marriage marks her official entry into power. As Nikki digs into the kingdom's history, she realizes that its only written record was shaped by an outside historian, deepening her determination to reclaim the narrative for her own family. In the past timeline, Luella navigates turning points of joy and loss — pregnancy, miscarriage, William's unexpected return, and Robert's eventual reconciliation — each testing her resilience as queen and as a woman. In the present, Nikki and her family face their own revelations, including Mama's confession that her refusal to help Mother Rita set the entire legal crisis in motion. Both women ultimately find a measure of peace: Luella returns to a restored version of the kingdom with the people she loves, and Nikki receives the profound gift of learning the origin of her own name, rooted in the land and flowers her grandmother cherished.
