Heartland traces Sarah Smarsh's family from her grandmother Betty's flight from abuse to the Kansas farm that became the family's anchor. Smarsh is born into a teen pregnancy, and her early childhood is marked by physical danger and economic precarity, including her father Nick's near-fatal chemical poisoning on the job. After her parents divorce, a ten-year-old Smarsh moves to live with Betty and Arnie on the farm, finding her only real stability there. She makes a conscious resolution to avoid the traps of teen pregnancy and substance abuse, setting herself apart from the path most girls in her position would follow. Education becomes her escape route, and she earns scholarships to college, though Arnie's death during those years is a painful loss. The book ends with Smarsh releasing her imaginary daughter August, a sign that the cycle of poverty has finally, at great cost, been broken.
