Hell of a Book follows two parallel stories — a young Black boy named Soot growing up in rural North Carolina and an unnamed Black author stumbling through a chaotic book tour. Soot's parents teach him to turn invisible as protection from racial violence, but his father William is shot dead by a police officer during a routine night jog. Meanwhile the narrator encounters Soot as a ghostly figure called The Kid, and is gradually pulled toward the tragedy he has been avoiding. The narrator visits Bolton, the site of Soot's murder and his own hometown, where he is confronted by the very officer who killed the boy. A public mental breakdown on live television finally forces him to face his own buried trauma and the reality of anti-Black violence all around him. The two narratives converge on Soot's own fatal encounter with a police officer, and on a shared call to bear witness and speak out.

The central story of Soot, William, and the unnamed narrator.

The narrator drunkenly dismisses Kelly as a secondary character whose only role is to fix him and ends the call.

A final italicized two-page dialogue between two unnamed voices ends the novel on an open, unanswered question.

Beneath the main plot of Hell of a Book lies a rich layer of supporting events that deepen both narratives. The narrator's chaotic life before and during the book tour is filled with comic mishaps, short-lived romances, a call center job he once held, and an unlikely encounter with Nic Cage on a flight. Soot's world is shaped by quieter private moments — his father's gentle comfort after a day of bullying, the punishment for a stolen comic book, and the slow erosion of reality through grief-driven hallucinations. The narrator's relationship with Kelly offers a rare opening for genuine human connection, even as he repeatedly sabotages it through emotional distance and self-destruction. Meanwhile, the community around Soot responds to William's murder with both grief and anger, as Reverend Brown offers comfort inside the church while Uncle Paul and other men plan outside. Together these secondary moments accumulate into a full portrait of two lives shaped by race, trauma, humor, and the relentless search for a way to be seen.

Hell of a Book is built on a series of turning points where characters are forced to confront what they have been avoiding. The narrator begins the novel almost entirely detached — unaware of his own Blackness, indifferent to the news of Soot's murder, and unable to trace his hallucinations to any buried pain. Encounters with media trainer Jack, publicist Sharon, and a series of private moments with The Kid steadily dismantle his defenses. Kelly's quiet message at the airport and The Kid's repeated plea to be known slowly crack him open, even as he resists. The climax arrives on a live television stage where the narrator finally remembers leaving his mother behind, confronts her death, and hallucinates her merging with Soot's grieving mother into a universal figure of loss. By the final chapters he accepts the weight of bearing witness and opens his arms to the boy whose story he has spent the whole novel refusing to tell.
