When a woman's body is discovered in Blackdown woods, BBC reporter Anna Andrews is sent to cover the story, forcing her back to the town she once fled. Detective Jack Harper leads the investigation while concealing that he spent the night before with the victim, Rachel Hopkins, his secret former lover. As more bodies pile up — all with friendship bracelets tied around their tongues — both Anna and Jack become suspects, and Jack is eventually removed from the case. The trail of evidence leads to Cat Jones, Anna's BBC rival, who is found in a staged suicide at her parents' house before escaping and attacking Anna and her mother in the woods. Priya shoots Cat dead after she tries to stab Anna, and the police settle on Cat as the killer behind all three deaths. In a final reveal, the novel's anonymous third narrator discloses she is Anna's mother, Mrs. Andrews — the true killer — who faked dementia and orchestrated everything to secure her daughter's happiness.

While the main murder investigation unfolds, a parallel web of planted evidence, suspicious behaviors, and hidden connections gradually unravels around Anna and Jack. Items are placed in Jack's car to frame him, and someone invisibly enters Anna's hotel room to tidy it and leave a disturbing mark on her photograph. The friendship bracelet motif spreads from the victims' tongues to Anna's wrist, the school car park, and eventually Mrs. Andrews's knitting needles, quietly connecting present danger to teenage trauma. Jack's own investigation is further compromised by his decision to suppress Rachel's phone and by his murky romantic entanglement with his deputy Priya. Mrs. Andrews, revealed at the end as the real killer, explains that she kidnapped Cat's daughters as leverage and never intended to let Cat survive long enough to expose her. The pool closes with the book's most chilling final image: Mrs. Andrews calmly crafting another bracelet, intended for her next victim.

This pool follows the revelations and turning points that link a traumatic teenage past to the killings now shaking Blackdown. Anna's recovered memories reveal how Rachel groomed and abused her, culminating in the devastating events of her sixteenth birthday, when she and Catherine Kelly were drugged and sexually assaulted by men Rachel had arranged to meet in the woods. Anna escaped but left Catherine behind — a choice that shaped both women's lives for decades, ultimately turning Catherine into Cat Jones, Anna's professional rival and the target of Mrs. Andrews's scheme. In the present, the key discoveries come rapid-fire: Anna realizes Cat and Catherine are the same person, Mrs. Andrews confesses to murdering Anna's father years before, and Priya turns her gun first on Jack and then on Cat. The pool also traces how truth has been systematically buried — by Anna's repressed memories, by a suicide note almost destroyed in a fireplace, and by an old woman performing dementia with convincing precision. By the final scene, the official story of Cat as the killer has been accepted by everyone except Anna, who quietly keeps the one piece of evidence that points to her mother.
