Mark arrives at the rain-soaked bus stop and stares at miserable wet cows standing in Harrison's field.

Anna decides to tell the story of Hitler's secret daughter, overriding Ben and Mark's competing story ideas.

Anna describes Heidi as Hitler's hidden child, kept secret because of her red birthmark and a limp.

Mark becomes so absorbed in Heidi's story that he asks Anna to arrive at the bus stop early the following day.

Heidi is moved to a smaller, more remote home with Fraulein Gelber as the war intensifies around them.

Heidi forms a genuine bond with new cook Frau Leib, despite Fraulein Gelber's warnings to keep her distance.

Frau Leib tells Heidi that a nearby farmer was arrested for sheltering a Jewish man in his home.

Heidi secretly stocks the hen house with food to create a hiding place for any Jewish people passing by.

Mark asks his father whether he would still love him even if Mark had killed hundreds of people.

Hitler arranges a secret meeting with Heidi and instructs her to trust no one except Fraulein Gelber.

Heidi is woken in the night and driven through darkness toward Berlin as Allied Forces advance on Germany.

Heidi and Fraulein Gelber shelter in a Berlin bunker, enduring constant bombs, bitter cold, and near-starvation.

Hitler arrives in the bunker, claims not to recognize Heidi, and orders her to be removed immediately.

Heidi is thrust into the bomb-ravaged streets alone and is caught in an explosion, badly injured.

A woman and her son rescue and adopt Heidi, renaming her Helga; Anna reveals Heidi told only her granddaughter the truth.

The story begins with four children gathered at a rainy bus stop where Anna introduces a character she calls Hitler's secret daughter, describing Heidi as a girl with a birthmark and limp who was hidden away from the world. Mark becomes so consumed by the story that he asks Anna to arrive early each day, and through her telling he learns how Heidi formed a dangerous bond with a kind cook who opened her eyes to the horrors of the Holocaust. Inspired by Heidi's growing moral awareness, Mark begins asking his own father profound questions about love, evil, and responsibility. As the Allied Forces advance, Heidi is driven to Berlin and forced into a bunker where her own father denies recognizing her and casts her out into the bombing. She survives an explosion, is rescued by a stranger, and is given a new name and a new life. The pool closes as Anna reveals Heidi kept her identity secret until death, sharing her story only with her granddaughter.

The core events of Heidi's hidden life and wartime fate.

Ben falls ill and misses school, leaving Anna to continue Heidi's story for only Mark and Tracey.

Frau Mundt tells Heidi about Germany's hardship after WWI and how Hitler promised to restore the nation's greatness.

Fraulein Gelber is found crying one day because her son has been conscripted and sent off to war.

A household cook breaks down telling Heidi that her sister was secretly killed for being below average intelligence.

Fraulein Gelber instructs Heidi to tell Frau Leib she is an adopted niece and never reveal her true identity.

Heidi spots an Allied Forces pilot flying overhead and feels a surprising, forbidden urge to wave at him.

Bus driver Mrs. Latter interrupts to argue that people blindly follow what they hear rather than thinking for themselves.

Mark tries to discuss the moral questions consuming him with his friend Bonzo, who only wants to discuss joining the army.

Mark hears a radio report about ongoing genocide and realizes such atrocities are still happening in the present day.

Ben returns from illness and is disappointed to learn the story has included no battles and is still ongoing.

Heidi wakes in the Berlin bunker to find Fraulein Gelber has vanished in the night, leaving her completely alone.

Helga grows old, keeps her true identity secret her entire life, and shares her story only with her granddaughter before dying.

The storytelling tradition at the bus stop began long before Heidi's story, when Anna invented The Game to help a nervous Little Tracey through her first days of school. As Anna's story unfolds, it draws heavily on the women who shaped Heidi's isolated world, including Frau Mundt's memories of postwar Germany, Fraulein Gelber's grief over her son at war, and a cook's heartbreaking confession about her murdered sister. Fraulein Gelber's instruction for Heidi to lie about her identity to the kind cook Frau Leib creates a tension at the heart of Heidi's growing moral awareness. Meanwhile, Mark's real-world encounters — from a bus driver's tirade about blind obedience to a radio broadcast about ongoing genocide — press him to see the story's themes as alive in the present. Ben's return from illness and his indifference to the moral weight of the story highlights how differently people can respond to history. The pool ends as elderly Helga finally breaks her lifelong silence, sharing her secret story with her granddaughter just before she dies.

The surrounding characters and scenes that shape the story's meaning.

Tracey enthusiastically volunteers story ideas for The Game, making the tale of Heidi a collaborative creation rather than Anna's alone.

Heidi notices Frau Leib secretly pocketing flour and sugar but chooses to stay silent and protect her.

Mark asks his teacher Mr. McDonald whether evil parents can raise good children, and Mr. McDonald struggles to answer.

Mark asks his parents about genocide over breakfast, and both admit they simply do not pay attention to it.

Mark has a nightmare where everyone around him salutes Hitler while he alone tries to warn them and is ignored.

Mark's mother dismisses his questions about Hitler during the morning rush, too preoccupied with daily routine to engage.

Mark imagines having a mother who would risk imprisonment for doing what is right, contrasting her with his actual mother.

Anna grows visibly somber and disturbed as she tells Heidi's story, as though personally affected by its events.

After Hitler's secret visit ends, Fraulein Gelber tells Heidi how lucky she was, and for once Heidi feels genuinely seen.

Heidi crawls through burning, bomb-shattered streets feeling that every inch forward strips her old life completely away.

Mark quietly realizes that Anna's emotional investment and detailed knowledge of German life mean Heidi's story was never fiction.

The storytelling at the bus stop begins as a genuinely shared act when Tracey helps shape Heidi's character, and Mark's growing obsession leads him to reverse his former resentment of the bus stop by arriving earlier each day. Heidi's inner world is defined by shame about her imperfect body and by Frau Mundt's chilling justification that murdering the unfit is both necessary and right. Small but significant turning points follow as Frau Leib's gift of a rabbit offers Heidi her first real warmth, and Heidi's quiet decision to protect Frau Leib's petty secret reveals the kind of loyalty and empathy the Nazi regime tries to stamp out. Mark's desperate questions reach every adult around him — his teacher, his parents, the bus driver — but go largely unanswered, driving him into a nightmare of silent complicity and a painful fantasy about a braver mother. As the story reaches its climax, the brief moment of feeling seen after Hitler's visit gives way to devastation, and Heidi's crawl through burning streets marks the complete destruction of her former life. The pool closes with Mark's private, unspoken realization that Anna's deep emotional knowledge means Heidi's story was never fiction at all.
