Frank Money escapes a mental health ward after receiving a letter warning that his sister Cee is dying in Atlanta. He travels south, driven by guilt over leaving Cee behind when he enlisted in the Korean War. Cee had been victimized by a predatory doctor who conducted experiments on her womb while she worked as his assistant. Frank rescues Cee from the doctor's house and carries her back to their hometown of Lotus, Georgia, to be healed by local women. Though Cee survives, she is left permanently infertile, a devastating loss both siblings must face together. Their story ends with a symbolic act of justice: properly burying a forgotten man and reclaiming Lotus as home.
