The unnamed narrator recalls his time on the troubled 1990s production of an arthouse horror film called Horror Movie, which he joined at the invitation of director Valentina Rojas and screenwriter Cleo Picane. The shoot was defined by escalating bodily harm, culminating in the narrator losing part of his finger on set and volunteering to be burned with a real cigarette for a shot. The production ended tragically when Cleo died during the chainsaw kill scene, with a court trial ruling her death a suicide. Decades later, Valentina—now dying of cancer—set a plan in motion to trigger a Hollywood reboot of the unfinished film, which involved severing the narrator's pinky to build the movie's mythology. The narrator became involved in the reboot, directed by Marlee Bouton, but grew increasingly disturbed by how little of his original role survived. He ultimately killed the actor cast to replace him and planned to seize control of the film's ending, completing his transformation into the Thin Kid.

The narrator's role in the reboot is reduced to a single scene after reports of his unusual body modifications reach the executives.

Before filming began, Valentina and Cleo carefully managed the conditions of the Horror Movie production, keeping the narrator isolated from the crew and shaping his approach to the role through incremental storytelling. The shoot was marked by small decisions with large consequences, such as forgotten prop cigarettes and Valentina's persistent dissatisfaction with on-set realism, which collectively pushed the narrator deeper into his character. Cleo's mysterious behavior on and off set—including the passive self-harm hinted at in her screenplay—added layers of ambiguity to the film's troubled history. When the 2008 plan to trigger a reboot unfolded, the narrator discovered an annotated screenplay in Valentina's home that complicated the film's authorship, a secret he later chose to withhold from director Marlee Bouton. The reboot brought new complications, including Marlee detecting anachronisms in the uploaded screenplay and the narrator being quietly sidelined to a single scene. These secondary choices and discoveries formed the hidden architecture holding the film's mythology together.

The narrator addresses the reader directly, declaring that he alone will decide the ending of Horror Movie.

From the beginning, the narrator's decision to join Horror Movie was driven by a desire to become someone new, and his transformation unfolded through a series of quiet but irreversible turning points. On set, he pushed himself further than required—sleeping in the supply room and waking with no memory of undressing—while growing suspicious that Valentina was deliberately engineering situations to put him in harm's way. After losing his finger and swallowing it to mirror the screenplay, the narrator's grip on any identity separate from the Thin Kid became increasingly tenuous. Over the following decades he cultivated the film's mythology as its sole survivor, and when the reboot arrived, small revelations—like the green-tinged scar on his pinky and Cleo's final admission about herself—deepened the blurring of art and reality. The reboot ultimately disappointed him, and he resolved to reclaim the role entirely by killing his replacement and painting Cleo's symbols on the floor in his own blood. By the novel's end, he addressed the reader directly and claimed full authorship over the Thin Kid's story.
