Authors acknowledge the paradox of questioning whether American democracy — once considered invulnerable — has become genuinely threatened.

Hugo Chavez wins Venezuela's presidency by promising a more authentic democracy for the country's anti-elite voters.

After winning power, Chavez blocks an opposition referendum, blacklists opponents, and stifles the media until Venezuela is recognized as an autocracy.

Italy's king invites Mussolini to form a cabinet, handing the political outsider a path to power through an establishment alliance.

German conservatives choose outsider Adolf Hitler to lead the government, believing they can use and then control him.

Authors introduce a four-point litmus test identifying politicians who reject democratic rules, delegitimize opponents, encourage violence, or threaten civil liberties.

Belgium's Catholic Party expels authoritarian sympathizers and allies with rival Socialists to block far-right parties from taking power.

Party insiders' promotion of unpopular candidate Hubert Humphrey at a Democratic leadership convention triggers protests and erodes public trust in backroom gatekeeping.

Both major American parties adopt binding presidential primaries, shifting candidate selection away from party insiders toward the broader public.

Donald Trump announces his candidacy for president, and initial expectations suggest he will follow previous outsider candidates into irrelevance.

Republican party gatekeepers fail to unite against Trump's candidacy despite his meeting every criterion on the authoritarian litmus test.

Without Republican leaders signaling danger, Trump wins the presidential election in a normalized two-party race.

Shortly after his inauguration, Trump seeks personal loyalty pledges from intelligence chiefs and fires FBI Director James Comey when he refuses.

Trump labels the media the enemy of the American people, echoing language previously used by Stalin and Mao.

Authors propose building a broad, diverse coalition of citizens united in defending democratic norms to reverse polarization and democratic decline.

How Democracies Die opens by challenging the assumption that American democracy is uniquely immune to collapse, using Venezuela as a case study of how elected leaders can slowly dismantle democratic systems from within. The authors examine the recurring historical pattern of establishment politicians empowering charismatic outsiders — from Mussolini in Italy to Hitler in Germany — only to lose control of them, and introduce a four-point litmus test for identifying authoritarian politicians. They show how American political parties historically protected democracy through candidate gatekeeping, but how that system broke down in 2016 when Republicans failed to unite against Donald Trump. The book traces Trump's path to power through media support and the collapse of invisible primary gatekeeping, and documents how — once in office — he pursued authoritarian strategies including attempting to capture intelligence agencies and attacking the free press. The authors close by arguing that only a broad, diverse coalition committed to democratic norms can reverse the damage done to American democracy.

The headline story of how democracies die — and how America arrived at its own crisis.

Chile's military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, kills President Salvador Allende and seizes control, illustrating how democracies can die through violent overthrow.

Former Venezuelan president Rafael Caldera makes a sympathetic speech defending Chavez's failed coup attempt, boosting Chavez's legitimacy rather than his own.

Republican insiders resolve a deadlocked leadership convention by choosing fourth-place candidate Warren Harding through backroom negotiations.

Peruvian outsider Alberto Fujimori wins the presidency with vague anti-terrorism promises despite having no prior political experience.

Two years after his election, Fujimori shuts down congress and seizes control, completing his transformation from outsider to tyrant.

Authoritarian leaders neutralize judicial oversight by packing courts with loyalists, blackmailing judges, or creating entirely new courts.

Southern states introduce poll taxes and literacy tests to systematically strip Black voters of political participation and preserve white rule.

Authors note that autocrats routinely exploit wars and terrorist attacks to consolidate executive authority beyond what democracy normally permits.

Spain's failure to maintain mutual toleration among political rivals destabilizes democracy and pushes the country into civil war.

Bipartisan opposition, including from Roosevelt's own party, kills his plan to pack the Supreme Court with additional justices.

Senate Republicans refuse to consider President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, marking a radical departure from longstanding historical precedent.

Newt Gingrich formalizes an aggressive anti-Democrat political strategy through training tapes disseminated throughout the Republican Party.

Republicans use filibusters and other procedural tools throughout the Obama presidency to block legislation and judicial appointments.

Trump creates the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to pursue stricter voter ID laws that would disproportionately affect minority voters.

North Carolina Republicans use gerrymandering and voter ID laws to seize control of all three government branches despite a heavily Democratic-leaning population.

This pool draws on the range of historical and international case studies the authors use to illustrate how democratic backsliding unfolds in practice. From Pinochet's violent coup in Chile to Fujimori's gradual power grab in Peru, the events span the spectrum of democratic collapse and highlight the mechanisms autocrats deploy — including court-packing, voter suppression, and exploiting crises. The authors also examine how American democracy's gatekeeping system, rooted in party backroom deals like the 1920 Republican convention, was always vulnerable to erosion. Key domestic turning points include the Republican strategy of obstruction during the Obama presidency, culminating in the unprecedented refusal to consider a Supreme Court nominee, and Trump's establishment of an election commission aimed at suppressing minority votes. The pool closes with North Carolina as a concrete contemporary warning of how antidemocratic tactics can be deployed legally within the United States itself.

The supporting examples and historical context behind democratic breakdown.

Authors reveal that since the Cold War, most democracies die not through violent coups but through gradual erosion beginning at the ballot box.

Austria's governing center-right party endorses a left-leaning rival candidate to prevent a far-right party from winning power.

The Founding Fathers create the Electoral College as a filter on presidential selection, but political parties fundamentally transform how it functions.

Despite widespread public support, Democratic Party insiders successfully block Henry Ford's path to the presidency, demonstrating effective candidate gatekeeping.

A Supreme Court ruling makes it significantly easier for outsider candidates with personal wealth or celebrity to bypass traditional party fundraising gatekeepers.

Trump builds his candidacy through right-wing media endorsements and controversy-driven coverage, bypassing the traditional invisible primary entirely.

Authors demonstrate that constitutions alone cannot protect democracy, pointing to authoritarian takeovers in countries that modeled their constitutions on the American document.

Authors identify mutual toleration and institutional forbearance as the two unwritten norms most critical to sustaining democratic systems.

Ecuador's congress votes to impeach President Bucaram on grounds of mental incapacity without ever formally debating the question of his actual fitness.

Intense political polarization in Chile causes President Allende to overreach his executive powers, eroding democratic norms and inviting military dictatorship.

Authors reveal that American democratic norms were historically sustained by the racial exclusion of African Americans following the Civil War.

Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign leads Republicans to demonize Democrats as unpatriotic enemies, eroding the foundational norm of mutual toleration.

Richard Nixon's surveillance and harassment of political opponents prompts a bipartisan coalition of senators to investigate, ultimately forcing his resignation.

The Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts fully democratize the American system but trigger the gradual unraveling of bipartisan norms that had relied on racial exclusion.

Authors conclude that extending norms of mutual toleration to all citizens in a multiethnic society would make American democracy genuinely exceptional.

This pool captures the analytical revelations and pivotal conceptual shifts that give How Democracies Die its argumentative backbone. Beginning with the book's central insight — that modern democratic breakdown starts at the ballot box rather than at gunpoint — the events chart the discovery of the invisible forces that sustain or undermine democracy. The authors reveal that constitutions alone are insufficient safeguards, identifying instead the unwritten norms of mutual toleration and institutional forbearance as the true guardians of democratic systems. They expose how the stability of American democracy was historically purchased through the racial exclusion of Black citizens, a contradiction that left the system vulnerable once fully democratized after the Civil Rights Acts. Key turning points include Nixon's forced resignation by a bipartisan coalition, Trump's rise through right-wing media, and the authors' ultimate conclusion that genuine democratic resilience requires extending these norms to all citizens in a multiethnic society.
