As he navigates his secret role, small episodes accumulate into a picture of life under oppression: contraband chocolate, illegal film screenings, a shocking classroom outburst about informers, and a mysterious package of medicine that briefly offers false reassurance. The discovery that Bunu was slowly poisoned through his coffee rather than dying of illness shatters Cristian's understanding of the dangers his grandfather faced, and finding currency and a stolen magazine article hidden in Cici's locked box forces a devastating reassessment of his sister. Cristian's growing certainty about who can be trusted is repeatedly upended—Dan's confession that he never gave Cristian the American dollar throws the whole foundation of his recruitment into doubt, while a hidden note from Bunu provides unexpected guidance after his death. His father's sudden break from silence, a private reconciliation with Luca, and the confrontation that forces Cici's confession all mark irreversible shifts in Cristian's world before the revolution consumes everything. Captured alongside Liliana, Cristian receives a message confirming his notebook reached Mr. Van Dorn, and the two share a first kiss in prison before the army's defection seals the regime's fate. Years later, the hardest revelation of all arrives: Cici's betrayal was an act of love, as she had hoped to buy them both a way out.
