Walt Whitman was born on Long Island in 1819 and spent his early years working to support his family after leaving school at eleven, eventually rising to edit Brooklyn newspapers. A forced resignation over anti-slavery politics sent him on a road trip across America and to a transformative lecture by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which inspired him to abandon journalism and pursue a new kind of American poetry. In 1855 he self-published the first edition of Leaves of Grass, earning Emerson's celebrated praise, and continued expanding the work through successive editions. The 1860 third edition introduced over a hundred new poems, including the despairing 'I Sit and Look Out,' written on the eve of the Civil War. Whitman served as a nurse during the war, witnessed Lincoln's assassination, and was later fired from a government job for the perceived obscenity of his poetry. He spent his final years in Camden, New Jersey, continuing to revise Leaves of Grass until his death in 1892.

Whitman's world was shaped by the rapid expansion of America and the violent tensions that expansion produced, from westward land acquisition to the bloody conflicts between pro- and anti-slavery settlers following the Kansas-Nebraska Act. His publishing career was marked by controversy at every turn: critics denounced the first Leaves of Grass as obscene, and Whitman courted support by including Emerson's praise letter in the second edition without permission, even as Emerson urged him to remove the most provocative poems. Despite pushback, Emerson and Thoreau visited him in person, and the work continued to grow edition by edition. When Whitman rushed to Washington to find his injured brother, he ended up staying for years as a nurse, an experience that reshaped the book's fourth edition. After a journalist friend defended him against obscenity charges, Whitman's reputation slowly recovered, and he spent his later years quietly expanding Leaves of Grass through three more editions.

The speaker sees a mother neglected and abandoned by her grown children, gaunt and desperate.

The speaker observes desperate sailors stranded at sea, casting lots to determine who among them must die.

The speaker sees arrogant persons heaping slights and degradations on laborers, the poor, and Black Americans.

The speaker closes the poem by declaring that despite witnessing all this suffering, he remains silent.

The 1860 poem cluster's dark exploration of despair is scattered and softened in post-Civil War editions.

After Whitman's death, Modernist writers claim his free verse as a foundational influence on American poetry.

Several key turning points redirected Whitman's life before he ever wrote 'I Sit and Look Out': his father's failed business ventures forced the family back to Long Island, Thoreau's arrest for war-tax refusal demonstrated the cost of political conviction, and Whitman's own anonymous self-promotion revealed how desperately he craved acceptance. The addition of the controversial Calamus poems to the 1860 edition marked a daring new direction. The poem itself then unfolds as a catalog of revelations, with the speaker bearing silent witness to secret anguish, abandoned mothers, betrayed women, global tyranny, desperate sailors, and the degradation of the poor and Black Americans. Each observation deepens the speaker's paralysis until the poem closes with his declaration of silence — a silence undercut by the very verses that precede it. After the Civil War, the poem's original cluster context, which amplified its despair, was dismantled by Whitman himself. Ultimately it fell to later Modernist writers to recognize and canonize the revolutionary quality of what Whitman had built.
