This pool follows the two central narrative threads of the novel from their opening moments to their shared conclusion. In Anastasia's story, the Romanov family loses everything as revolution strips them of power, exile strips them of freedom, and a Bolshevik firing squad strips them of their lives. In Anna's story, a decades-long legal fight to be recognized as Anastasia winds through German courts and ends without resolution. The two timelines converge on the same traumatic year, revealing that the woman behind the claim was not a grand duchess but a wounded factory worker named Franziska Schanzkowska. Together, these events form the backbone of the novel's central question: who is Anna Anderson, and does the truth even matter to those who need her to be Anastasia?

On Anastasia's side, the journey into exile is shown in its full arc: the family's departure from the palace, their river voyage, their confinement in Tobolsk, and the creeping deterioration of their circumstances through winter. On Anna's side, the pool traces the institutional and social forces that both support and undermine her claim, from the testimony of Pierre Gilliard to the Romanov family's formal repudiation of her. The pool also captures Anna's movements through Europe and America as she is repeatedly displaced, patronized, and institutionalized by those around her. Together these events show how both women were shaped not just by dramatic turning points but by the slow erosion of their circumstances.

For Anastasia, the pool tracks the private turning points of her imprisonment: the jewels sewn into undergarments, the night Semyon enters the girls' room, the kiss with Tomas, and the final moments before the execution. For Anna, it follows the decisions that construct and sustain her false identity, from her first declaration at Dalldorf Asylum to the manipulations of those around her who need her claim to be true. The pool also surfaces the revelations that readers must weigh for themselves: the birth of a child Anna denies having, the scar left by a mother's ring, and a mineshaft that receives a body still alive. These events form the interpretive heart of the novel.
