The story begins when Dianna declares the twins should apply to the prestigious California School of the Arts, sparking a rivalry between Noah and Jude rooted in their mother's favoritism toward Noah's art. Years later, Jude attends CSA while Noah has given up art entirely, and the novel reveals the catastrophic chain of events that drove them apart. At the center of that chain is Dianna's hidden affair with sculptor Guillermo Garcia, which Noah discovers and which ends with Dianna dying after Noah yells that he hates her. Noah buries his guilt in a lie, telling his family Dianna was driving to reconcile with Benjamin, while Jude buries her own anger by withholding Noah's CSA application. In the present timeline, Jude's mission to win Dianna's forgiveness through sculpture forces all the secrets to the surface, reuniting siblings, lovers, and grieving hearts. The book ends with the twins finally free of their shared deceptions, and Benjamin quietly accepting Noah for who he truly is.

The separation of their parents adds further instability, pushing both twins toward desperate and sometimes self-destructive behavior. She works behind the scenes to repair what she broke, emailing Brian and surrendering her plans for her own CSA future.
