Family shame, a secret schoolboy friendship with Sandys, and the psychological collapse Gaunt undergoes at the front all explain the man he becomes before and during his captivity. His time as a prisoner of war forms its own complete arc — with the optimistic Devi, the steady Pritchard, a flooded tunnel, solitary confinement, a desperate escape on foot, and a heartbreaking sacrifice at the Dutch border. Back in England after the war, Gaunt quietly tends to the wreckage around him, visiting the shattered Hayes and staying close to his sister Maud. The pool spans the full narrative, from Gaunt being pressured into a war he never believed in to the hopeful final letter from Maud about her work in Berlin.
