The pool opens with the tenderness of Shoba and Shukumar holding hands in the dark and the grief of Shukumar's final confession, then moves into the ritual comfort of Mr. Pirzada's candy gifts and the communal joy of pumpkin carving before war news shatters the mood. Mr. Kapasi's exchange of addresses with Mrs. Das and the later loss of that slip of paper bookend his quietly tragic hopes, while Boori Ma's pickpocketing captures the vulnerability that leads to her downfall. The middle stories offer Miranda's unused cocktail dress, Rohin's defining whisper, Mrs. Sen's warm lessons to Eliot, and the one happy afternoon the Sens share at the seaside. The pool closes with the townspeople's boycott of Haldar's store and the narrator's distant, affecting grief over Mrs. Croft's obituary.

This pool traces the moments of choice and revelation that change the direction of each story in the collection. It opens with the brief, deceptive intimacy of Shoba and Shukumar making love before moving through Lilia's suppressed education and the shattering news that war has come to Dacca. Mr. Kapasi's decision to extend the tour leads directly to Mrs. Das's confession and his painful failure to offer what she needed, while Boori Ma's gradual displacement to the rooftop foreshadows her total expulsion. The pool then traces the origin of Miranda's affair at a cosmetics counter, her quiet solo walk back to the Mapparium, and Mrs. Sen's surrender of driving as a symbol of her failed assimilation. Sanjeev's resignation is captured in the moment he follows Twinkle to place the silver bust on the mantle, and Bibi's story closes with her unexpected cure. The pool ends with the narrator's arrival in America on the day of the moon landing, framing the immigrant journey as its own form of wonder.
