A second jury finds William Hale and John Ramsey guilty of murder and sentences both men to life in prison.

Grann concludes that the Osage Reign of Terror involved far more victims and perpetrators than the Bureau's official investigation ever uncovered.

The Osage Nation's hard-won deal securing mineral headrights for all tribal members transforms them into some of the wealthiest people in the world, making them targets for deadly greed. Anna Brown's disappearance and murder expose a pattern of violence that local authorities cannot or will not solve, and allies who seek federal help are killed before they can act. The Bureau of Investigation finally assigns veteran lawman Tom White to the case, and his undercover team unravels a conspiracy linking William Hale to fabricated alibis, fraudulent insurance schemes, and multiple murders designed to steal Osage headrights. Ernest Burkhart's confession names the killers and triggers arrests that bring the case to trial, though the path to conviction is bitterly contested. A guilty verdict finally imprisons William Hale and his accomplice, delivering the justice the Osage Nation sought for years. Journalist David Grann's later investigation reveals that the Bureau's solution was only partial, and that the full scope of the Reign of Terror far exceeded what the official record captured.

Mollie Burkhart divorces Ernest Burkhart, later remarries, and is officially declared legally competent to manage her own finances.

William Hale's rise from penniless cowboy to the most powerful man in Osage County establishes the corrupt social fabric in which the murders will take root. A government-imposed guardian system strips many Osage members of financial autonomy over their own oil wealth, enabling abuse by the very officials appointed to protect them. A string of suspicious deaths — including Henry Roan found shot in his car and William Stepson killed by suspected poison — builds the terror that convinces the Osage Tribal Council to formally petition Washington for help. Tom White's undercover team works methodically through missing evidence and reluctant witnesses, piecing together Bryan Burkhart's movements on the night Anna Brown was killed and exposing the Shoun brothers' suspicious bedside visit to the dying Bill Smith. The courtroom drama that follows proves unstable, with Ernest Burkhart reversing his testimony before his own daughter's death moves him to plead guilty. In the aftermath, Mollie Burkhart rebuilds her life independently, while Tom White carries his unflinching sense of justice into a new role overseeing the very prison that holds the men he convicted.

From Mollie's childhood forced assimilation at a Catholic boarding school to the blended funeral rites that could not fully honor Anna Brown, the collision between Osage culture and white society shapes every turning point in the story. Bill Smith's private suspicion that Mollie's mother Lizzie was deliberately poisoned, and Mollie's own secret warning to her priest, show how clearly the victims understood their danger before any investigator did. The Bureau of Investigation's arrival brings new rigor to the case, as undercover agents expose fabricated evidence and Tom White identifies the chilling pattern behind the murders: each killing funneled more headrights toward Ernest Burkhart's guardianship, systematically stripping Mollie's family of their wealth. Two decisive moments break the case wide open — Blackie Thompson's face-to-face confrontation with Burkhart, and Mollie's rapid recovery under a new doctor's care, which confirms she had been poisoned by her own physicians. A bribed hung jury delays justice before the second trial delivers a conviction, closing the Bureau's investigation. David Grann's archival research later reveals the darkest truth: murders carried out by many others beyond Hale's circle continued for years after his imprisonment, implicating virtually the entire community.
