Beginning with early European contact at the Congo River, this pool traces the headline events that built and ultimately dismantled Leopold's private empire. It follows Stanley's famous African explorations and Leopold's calculated use of diplomatic conferences to seize control of a vast territory he named the Congo Free State. The rubber boom transformed the colony into a machine of forced labor, and George Washington Williams became the first person to publicly charge Leopold with crimes against humanity. The pool closes with Leopold's death and Belgium's formal assumption of the colony, ending one man's reign over a privately owned empire.

Starting with the slave trade that devastated the Kingdom of Kongo and tracing the formative years of Henry Morton Stanley, this pool illuminates the events that constructed the machinery of Leopold's rule. It covers Leopold's obsessive study of colonial profit records, Stanley's brutal cross-continent expedition, and the diplomatic lobbying that won Leopold American recognition. The pool highlights the contributions of figures whose voices were often suppressed — the conscripted soldiers of the Force Publique, missionary William Sheppard's discovery of the severed-hand practice, and the tragic informant Hezekiah Shanu. It follows Morel's founding of his uncensored newspaper and Casement's dispatching to the interior as the reform movement gathered steam. The pool ends with Morel's lonely stand against World War I, showing how the same moral conviction that drove his Congo campaign ultimately cost him his freedom and reputation.

Conrad's horrified retreat from the Congo and Casement's compromised report mark the early stirrings of a reckoning, while Casement's fateful meeting with Morel and the founding of the Congo Reform Association represent the turning point in the fight against Leopold. The Commission of Inquiry's unexpected descent into truth signaled Leopold's undoing, even as he tried to spin its findings. The pool closes with the tragedies that befell the reformers — Casement's execution for treason, Morel's imprisonment for pacifism — and with the revelation that Leopold's ghost lived on in the figure of the dictator Mobutu.
