An anonymous speaker encounters a pale, haggard knight lingering alone beside a desolate lake and presses him to explain his wretched state. The knight responds by narrating how he met a beautiful, otherworldly lady in the meadows and became utterly enchanted by her. He adorned her with garlands, placed her on his horse, and rode with her through the forest until she led him to her hidden cave. Inside the cave she wept, and the knight comforted her before she lulled him into a deep, fateful sleep. In that sleep he dreamed of pale kings and warriors crying out that the merciless lady held them all in her thrall. He woke alone on a cold hillside, and now he lingers by the barren lake, as pale and hollow as the figures from his dream.

When the knight speaks, he fills in sensory details about the lady — her loose hair, her graceful step, her wild eyes — and about the enchanted time they spent together riding through the forest and singing. He recounts the lady's strange, untranslatable speech and the full day they spent alone together, seeing no other soul. The pool closes with the most harrowing image of the knight's dream, the starved and gaping lips of pale figures stretching wide in silent, desperate warning.

This pool traces the poem's pivotal moments of recognition and change, beginning with the speaker pressing the knight hard enough to break his silence. The knight's account reveals a series of turning points — his recognition of the lady's supernatural nature, the moment the balance of power shifts from him to her, and his willful choice to believe her unintelligible words are love. Each step deepens his surrender: he loses sight of the world beyond her, accepts magical food he cannot name, and lets her lead him into an enclosed supernatural space. The dream sequence delivers the poem's central revelation, as pale warrior-victims cry the lady's true name and expose her as utterly without mercy. The pool ends with the knight recognising that his own pale, wasting state by the lake is the very fate those dream figures warned him of.
