Nola's deepening depression leads her to secretly prepare a suicide in the barn, while Maggie is sexually assaulted by a group of white teenagers at their hangout house. Together, Maggie and LaRose work quietly to remove every potential weapon from the Ravich home, protecting Nola without her knowledge. Romeo's calculated infiltration of the local hospital gives him the tools for his eventual revenge plot, even as Mrs. Peace passes down the family's ancestral history to Snow and Josette. By the time Maggie transfers to the reservation school and LaRose first walks into the spirit world alone in the woods, both families have become fully intertwined.
