A New York family rents a luxurious vacation home on Long Island, seeking a week of disconnected calm. Late on their second night, the Black owners arrive unexpectedly, having fled a city-wide blackout, and ask to stay in their own home. After tense negotiation, the two couples begin coexisting uneasily as signs of a broader disaster multiply around them. A terrifying sonic boom fractures the glass of the house and sends Amanda running into the woods, while Clay returns from a failed drive into town having lied about what he witnessed. Archie falls gravely ill, losing teeth and collapsing, forcing G.H. and Clay to seek help only to find their one local contact refuses them. The story closes with Clay declaring the vacation house to be home, signaling a grim new reality for both families.

The headline events of two families navigating a vacation and an unfolding catastrophe.

Amanda shops extravagantly at the grocery store, cataloging items as an almost sensual pleasure.

Clay sneaks away from the family to smoke a cigarette while grilling hamburgers outside.

The family spends a lazy, uneventful day at the beach, with Clay and Amanda both drawn to the lifeguards.

The family stops at a Starbucks on the way home from the beach, comforted by its familiarity.

Archie and Rose wander past the fence in the woods and discover a house they had not seen before.

Amanda gets drunk by the pool as G.H. explains that anyone willing to work the system can get rich.

The four adults share a relaxed dinner comparing past vacations, with Amanda recalling Disney and G.H. recalling Paris.

Amanda and Clay decide to leave the next morning, then have sex together in the bedroom.

Amanda and Clay lie in bed with their children, unable to sleep and unable to agree on whether to stay.

Rose breaks a window to enter the house in the woods, finds a stack of DVDs, and puts on Friends.

Before the crisis begins, the family's habits of comfort and consumption set the tone: Amanda shops with near-erotic pleasure, Clay sneaks cigarettes, and a beach day offers welcome normalcy. When G.H. and Ruth arrive, polite negotiation takes over, from G.H.'s cash offer to the couple's resigned retreat to the basement suite. As the days pass, the two families edge toward uncomfortable intimacy, sharing meals, comparing their pasts, and helping each other through Archie's illness. The pleasures of food, drink, and conversation continue alongside growing dread, culminating in Amanda and Clay's decision to leave and their inability to resolve even that. The sonic boom's return and an endless night in bed with the children captures the paralysis at the novel's heart. Rose's solo adventure into the neighboring house, where she finds DVDs to watch, closes this pool with the book's signature dark irony.

The quieter, everyday moments that reveal character and deepen the disaster's slow dread.

Alone in the hot tub on their first night, Amanda feels an unsettling sense that someone is watching her.

G.H. and Ruth's arrival forces Amanda to realize she never imagined the owners of such a fine house could be Black.

Amanda spots a partial news notification about a massive blackout but cannot open the app to read the full story.

The omniscient narrator reveals that what is happening around the characters is far greater than a simple blackout.

Clay encounters a panicked Spanish-speaking woman stranded by the roadside and drives away without helping her.

The narrator discloses that the terrifying noise was a military jet breaking the sound barrier over the Eastern seaboard.

Ruth says she wants Swan Lake playing when she dies; Amanda blurts out that G.H. resembles Denzel Washington.

Ruth offers Amanda's family the option to stay at the house indefinitely, signaling a genuine shift in her attitude.

Amanda wakes the morning after the flamingos and vomits a thin pink liquid, raising fears she may be ill.

While preparing to take Archie to the hospital, the group suddenly realizes that Rose is not in the house.

Clay confesses to G.H. in the car that he spoke to the distressed woman on the road and left her behind.

Ruth and Amanda shout at each other while searching for Rose, both finally admitting they are terrified for their children.

At Danny's house, G.H. recognizes that Danny's hostility is racially motivated and that no real help will come from him.

From Amanda's first uneasy feeling of being watched to her jarring realization that the homeowners are Black, this pool charts the moments where assumptions are stripped away. Partial phone notifications, flickering emergency broadcasts, and the narrator's quiet disclosures all confirm that the world outside the vacation house is collapsing in ways no one inside can fully grasp. Clay's decision to abandon a panicked woman on the road and his later confession to G.H. mark the moral low point of the novel, while Ruth's resignation to death and Amanda's Denzel Washington blunder expose how race and class remain live wires even at the edge of catastrophe. Rose's disappearance and the adults' fragmenting attempts to manage the crisis make clear that the old social order is dissolving. G.H.'s recognition of Danny's racial hostility confirms that tribal fear will outlast civilization, leaving both families with no one to turn to but each other.

The key discoveries and shifts that expose the gap between what the characters know and what is really happening.
