The story opens with the Logan family of rural Mississippi watching as their friend TJ Avery is put on trial for a murder actually committed by two white boys, and an all-white jury delivers the verdict everyone feared. The Great Depression presses down on the family farm as plantation owner Harlan Granger repeatedly offers financial help designed to trap the Logans in debt. A union organizer arrives to propose an alliance of Black and white farm workers, but the plantation owners fight back with violence, burning the organizers' house and killing John Moses. With the farm still struggling, David leaves to work the railroad, and not long after, eldest son Stacey disappears overnight chasing the promise of easy wages at a Louisiana cane plantation. The entire family mobilizes to find him, and when he is finally located in a Louisiana jail and brought home, Stacey declares there is no better place to be.

Beneath the headline events, daily life in Spokane County is filled with smaller moments that reveal the depth of injustice pressing on its residents. Cassie's childhood innocence is tested early through her father's strict lessons about honesty, while the sharecropping Turner family watches their best cotton season destroyed by a government order they had no part in causing. The arrival of Bud's biracial daughter Suzella stirs jealousy in Cassie and raises uncomfortable questions about identity and belonging in a rigidly segregated world. Stuart Walker's exploitation of Jacey Peters and his later pursuit of Suzella illustrate the dangers white men pose to Black women with no legal recourse available to protect them. Black farmers cautiously organize in the Logan barn but refuse to fully commit to the union, leaving the movement fragile and leaderless. These threads culminate in Stacey's quiet nighttime farewell to Cassie before slipping away, setting off the anxious search that drives the novel to its resolution.

Beneath the larger events of the novel lies a series of smaller but pivotal moments that redirect the story and deepen its characters. Cassie's early punishment for disobeying her father over marbles plants the lesson that recklessness has consequences, an idea echoed in TJ's own testimony, which cannot save him from a predetermined verdict. The strange, silent Wordell becomes an unexpected source of honesty and comfort for Cassie, first calling out her jealousy over Suzella and later sitting outside her window to play harmonica through her scarlet fever illness. Suzella's direct confrontation with Cassie forces the young girl to face her own prejudice toward someone who has never been unkind to her. The Christmas gathering brings both Jake Willis's menacing fixation on Suzella and Lee Annie's bold declaration that she will register to vote no matter the cost. The pool closes with two acts of unexpected grace — Mr. Morrison's silent strength sparing Bud from humiliation, and a Louisiana sheriff releasing Stacey out of his own moral objection to plantation abuses.

The turning points, revelations, and emotional shifts that quietly change everything.
