The novel opens on Kontokali Beach in Greece, where Ember Reed, a young yacht stewardess, walks the shoreline at night, clutching wine and crying over a devastating breakup: It took four months to fall in love with a man and four minutes for him to destroy her world.
Two years later, 26-year-old Ember boards the superyacht Sinking Sun as chief stew, the head stewardess overseeing guest service and interior operations, for Season 4 of
Close Quarters, a reality TV show about luxury charter yacht crews. The narrative alternates between Ember's first-person account and post-production confessional transcripts formatted as TV interview segments. This is Ember's first season leading an interior team, and she is eager to prove herself to Captain Gary Parks, an Australian captain she has previously worked with. She also hopes the show will demonstrate the value of her career to her father, a successful real estate businessman who dismisses yachting as making cocktails and doing laundry.
Ember's excitement collapses when Finn Pearson, a 28-year-old Irish chef and the man from the prologue, arrives on board and greets her with his old nickname, "Firefly." Ember suspects the producers deliberately cast them together. The remaining crew includes Eli, a South African deckhand; Leah, a stewardess from Alabama; Bernard, a British steward; Palmer, the bosun, or senior deck crew leader; Cameron, a Scottish deckhand; and Gisella, a Spanish deck stew from Barcelona who splits time between deck and interior duties. Ember bonds with Gisella and chooses her as a roommate.
At the first crew meeting, Captain Gary reveals that Finn and Gisella are a couple. Ember is blindsided, struggling to keep composure while realizing the producers have made her roommate her ex's girlfriend.
The first charter's dinner service falls apart when miscommunication between Finn and Ember leads to delayed courses, lukewarm plates, and guest complaints. They argue fiercely in the galley, the yacht's kitchen. The second dinner, a Roman Empire Bacchanal, goes far better as they fall into sync and deliver flawless service.
Tensions compound when producers reveal Ember and Finn's romantic history to Gisella during post-charter interviews. On a crew night out, Finn offers Ember a genuine apology and suggests they try to be friends. At a later crew dinner, when Ember grows distressed discussing her father's dismissal of her career on camera, Finn draws attention away from her by sharing his own vulnerable story about his grandmother, the woman who taught him to cook.
Over subsequent charters, their connection deepens despite attempts to stay professional. Finn reveals that the Dublin restaurant he left Ember to open was meant to honor his grandmother, and that his business partner embezzled funds and destroyed the venture. Ember confesses she has not seriously dated anyone since Finn, admitting her heart still belongs to "a chef on a boat in Greece," and apologizes for dismissing his dream. One morning, Finn makes banana pancakes, Ember's favorite hangover food, as a peace offering, recalling his old promise to make them for her every morning. She accepts, and they establish a tentative truce.
Ember's professional confidence grows as Captain Gary privately tells her he is proud of her work, even as her father continues to dismiss her career as a phase during a phone call. When Finn has a breakdown during a charter featuring a Michelin-star chef guest, trashing food and declaring himself a failure, Ember clears the galley and talks him through it by invoking his grandmother's legacy. Their foreheads touch and Finn nearly kisses her before they are interrupted.
On a crew beach day, Finn confirms that a firefly tattoo below his heart is for Ember. She has her own secret: a northern lapwing, the bird of Ireland, inked on the back of her neck. That night at a beach concert, Finn slides behind Ember in the crowd and touches her intimately. She leans into him, but someone approaches and Finn steps away. Minutes later, Gisella kisses Finn in full view. Devastated, Ember resolves to cut him off entirely.
The crew fractures further when Gisella kisses Cameron during Truth or Dare while Finn sleeps, hurting both Finn and Leah, who has feelings for Cameron. On the next crew night out, Ember deliberately kisses Eli in front of Finn. Finn storms after her, and in a dark alley they argue before he kisses her, confessing he has already ended things with Gisella.
Ember goes to Finn in the primary guest cabin that night. They remove their microphones, and Finn reveals he has not touched Gisella since seeing Ember again. He explains that he left a note under Ember's door, but suspects Gisella intercepted it. Gisella had asked him to maintain the appearance of their relationship so she could control the narrative of their breakup. They reconcile fully, spend the night together, and Finn sets an alarm so they can return to their cabins before morning. The alarm fails.
Gisella discovers them, and the crew floods the doorway. Gisella calls Ember a whore, Eli walks away in disappointment, and Leah accuses Ember of keeping secrets. Captain Gary orders Finn and Ember to the bridge and warns he will fire them if the tension compromises service. Ember has a panic attack, and Finn holds her through it, telling her the cameras and public opinion do not matter.
During charter eight, a guest named Maria falls overboard at dusk. Ember dives into the swelling sea and keeps Maria afloat until Palmer and Eli arrive in the tender, the yacht's small support boat. Captain Gary tells Ember she saved the guest's life. Afterward, Ember tells Finn she considered quitting but realizes she loves her career and no longer needs her father's approval.
At the farewell dinner after the final charter, Finn addresses the crew, declaring publicly for the first time that he loves Ember and that he ended things with Gisella before anything happened between them. Palmer reveals that Gisella was in his bed the same night she accused Finn of betrayal, exposing her hypocrisy. Leah's expression softens toward Ember.
In the months after filming, the production team edits Ember and Finn unfavorably, but at the reunion taping, previously unseen footage corroborates their timeline. Eli forgives Ember with a hug, and Leah apologizes. Finn announces he is opening a restaurant called Pygo, Greek for firefly, in South Florida. Ember accepts a chief stew position on a private superyacht.
Two years later, Pygo receives its first Michelin star. Ember's father calls to express pride for the first time, revealing that his own love story with Ember's mother began when she was dating his best friend, a quiet parallel to Ember and Finn's history. Finn proposes in the restaurant kitchen beside a stack of banana pancakes, using a ring crafted from the melted gold of his grandmother's pinky ring. Ember says yes. She reflects that what was once painful was the final test before their breakthrough, and that their love, though imperfect, is entirely theirs.
