The pandemic pushes parcel volume to breaking point, and when Grant devises a solution his supervisors dismiss, it is later stolen and enacted by higher-up officials in polo shirts. He goes above and beyond on countless deliveries — hauling appliances across creeks, defusing dangerous dogs, navigating hostile residents — all while witnessing his coworkers handle election ballots with extraordinary care and seriousness. The job takes emotional tolls too: a new hire quits after breaking down on route, while Grant's own father's life and death cast long shadows over his days. A final spiritual experience and a bittersweet meal of his mother's last pancakes mark the memoir's quiet emotional conclusion.

He and his wife agree to take the mail carrier job not from enthusiasm but from necessity, and his family senses together that something life-changing is beginning. Along his route, Grant is repeatedly confronted by his own past — the places he worked, the roads his father walked, and the woman who once helped him manage his anger — forcing a reckoning he had not anticipated. Election season, armed encounters in the dark mountains, and physical injuries all test his sense of identity and safety, while his father's dying advice about self-reliance slowly unravels under the weight of people who keep showing up to help him. A breakthrough in the bath, witnessed by his quietly patient wife, marks the moment Grant finally lets go of the need to appear capable and strong. By the time he discovers he could have applied for Medicaid all along, the irony lands not as a wound but as proof that the journey was never really about healthcare.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that define Grant's transformation.
