These scenes develop the Major's growing disillusionment with his son and his community while deepening his connection to Mrs. Ali through shared experiences and small acts of loyalty. The planning of the Mughal dinner draws the Major and Mrs. Ali together even as it reveals the patronising attitudes of those around them. After the dinner's fallout, the Major drifts through a hollow Christmas season before acting on his feelings. The golf dinner is explored through the Major's private failures of nerve rather than its public chaos, showing how his reticence makes him complicit in the injustice Mrs. Ali faces. Roger's confession about Sandy forces the Major to confront his own failures as a father and galvanises his decision to pursue passion rather than practicality. The pool closes at the cliff and the hospital, where the loss of the Churchill gun becomes the final proof that people matter more to the Major than legacy ever did.
