Tina Knowles is an entrepreneur, stylist, fashion designer, actress, and author. She is the mother of music icons Beyoncé and Solange Knowles. She is also well-known for her hair salon in Houston, Texas, called Headliners, her styling work for the 1990s girl group Destiny’s Child, her clothing line House of Deréon, and her mentorship program, Tina’s Angels. Knowles also has a rich philanthropic portfolio, which, along with Tina’s Angels, “includes the non-profit performing arts organization WACO Theater, The Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth in Houston [and] BeyGOOD, a nonprofit dedicated to establishing economic equity through a wide array of initiatives” (“About Ms. Tina.” Tina Knowles Book).
In Matriarch, Knowles tells her own story in her own words for the first time. The title traces Knowles’s childhood in Galveston, Texas with her parents, siblings, nephews, nieces, and cousins, through her familial and vocational life over the years following. In the text, Knowles identifies many of her childhood experiences as the inspiration for her caretaking, artistic, and philanthropic efforts over the years following.
Knowles’s fashion design endeavors have also been featured in a range of publications. Her work has appeared in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel, InStyle, and Sports Illustrated. While she has played a significant role in Beyoncé’s styling throughout her career, she has also done costume design for numerous feature films including Dreamgirls, Pink Panther, Obsessed, Cadillac Records, and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
Prior to Matriarch, Knowles published the 2002 title Destiny’s Style: Bootylicious Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Secrets from Destiny’s Child. This text examined the role that fashion played in the success of Destiny’s Child. Knowles has also been the recipient of several honors, including a 2001 ACE Award and a 2020 Inspiring Leadership Award from Essence Festival’s Empowerment Experience.
Matriarch is fashion designer and entrepreneur Tina Knowles’s memoir. The text also falls under two subgenres, the celebrity memoir and the confessional memoir. According to Jessica Duke’s essay “What Is A Memoir?,” celebrity memoirs “cover important moments in the author’s rise to fame and success,” while confessional memoirs “are unapologetically bold” and reveal “painful or difficult secrets about [the author] or their family and how it has affected them” (Dukes, Jessica. “What Is A Memoir?” Celadon Books). Other notable celebrity memoirs that address both fame and family dynamics include Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died (2022) and Alex Van Halen’s Brothers (2024).
Matriarch fulfills these definitions in the following ways: Knowles is a noted cultural figure, not only because of her work with Headliners, Destiny’s Child, and Tina’s Angels, but because she is the mother of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles. In Matriarch, she traces her work to establish herself as a stylist and artist, while challenging public opinions of her family life and herself as a person. In particular, Knowles incorporates more difficult aspects of her upbringing in Galveston, Texas, and of her relationship with her ex-husband Mathew Knowles. These aspects of the text lend it a confessional and vulnerable tone.
Knowles’s use of the first person point of view and her incorporation of anecdotes satisfy the parameters of the genre. She is sharing intimate aspects of her personal life to tell a story of resilience, survival, success, and self-realization. At the same time, Knowles does take some liberties with the genre. Traditional memoirists focus on “a pivotal moment in their lives and try to recreate the event through storytelling.” In Matriarch, Knowles embraces a more autobiographical style, in that she renders events from her life from childhood through to the present day. In taking this liberty, Knowles offers a more comprehensive and holistic examination of motherhood, resilience, and personal growth.
