Behind the main drama of the Miko Kings are the formative experiences and secondary struggles of those caught up in the story. Hope's miserable years at Hampton Normal School and his transfer to Jones Academy under batting coach Wild Buck Taylor shaped the man who would become the Miko Kings' best pitcher. Justina's traumatic past in New Orleans — her activism, her arrest, her silence under torture — forged the legendary figure known as Black Juice, though she herself feels she failed. Henri Day fought public humiliation and political attacks in Ada, working tirelessly to establish a team he believed could unite the tribes and reclaim something taken from them. In 1969, the day-to-day life of the nursing home reveals how Hope is being failed by those charged with his care, while a compassionate nurse named Kerwin draws out the old stories. Finally, Lena's decision to post about the Miko Kings on a blog connects descendants across time, while her reading of an alternate ending to Ezol brings a form of communal peace to the story's wounds.

Lena's recognition of Ezol in an old silent film confirms that a real woman from the past has crossed time to reach her, and Ezol's theories about Choctaw time and baseball force Lena to reconsider history itself. Justina's violent past in Storyville — and her silence under torture — reveals the person hidden beneath the legend of Black Juice, while Henri's inspiration at a stickball match shows what drove the Miko Kings into existence. Ezol's private journal unlocks the romantic entanglements at the heart of the betrayal: her love for Blip, and the doomed romance between Bo Hash and Cora that Henri tried to suppress. A letter from Algernon Pinchot delivers the shattering revelation that Lena's grandmother was Ezol's own cousin, making Ezol her ancestor and the grief of the past suddenly personal. The pool ends with Hope, in his final dreams, rewriting the last game and choosing — at least in his heart — to stay true to his family.
