Central to his plan is Vin, a young Mistborn he recruits from the underground and trains to infiltrate the noble class under a false identity. As Vin moves through the noble balls of Luthadel, the crew works to instigate a House War while secretly building a rebel skaa army. Setbacks mount when the rebel soldiers are destroyed through insubordination and Kelsier is killed in a public confrontation with the Lord Ruler — but his death ignites the very skaa rebellion he had planned all along. Vin takes up Kelsier's final weapons and breaks into the Lord Ruler's palace, where she uncovers his true identity and strips him of his immortality. Crucial discoveries accumulate along the way: the truth about Kelsier's wife Mare, the detection ability of burning bronze, and a gold-fueled vision of an alternate self that measures how far Vin has grown.
