Reena's parents lose their newspaper jobs and decide the family will leave New York City for a new life elsewhere.

The family drives to Maine with a 'Moving to Maine' sign on their car, and strangers along the route wave and welcome them.

The family settles in a small Maine harbor town, and Reena and Luke see a real farm with cows for the first time.

Reena's mother sends the family to deliver books to Mrs. Falala, who yanks Luke inside her house and refuses the books.

Sent alone with more books, Reena speaks rudely to Mrs. Falala while defending Luke after Mrs. Falala flicks his thumb.

Reena's parents volunteer her and Luke to help Mrs. Falala at her barn three mornings every week as an act of respect.

Mrs. Falala puts Reena and Luke to work shoveling manure and reveals her plan for Reena to show Zora at local fairs.

Zora chases Reena across the pasture and knocks her into the air; an angry Luke then slips the halter over Zora's head.

Mrs. Falala gives Reena and Luke used work clothes identical to the boots and overalls worn by the Birchmere Farm teenagers.

Reena realizes Zora is lonely and asks Beat, Zep, and the Birchmere Farm owner to help find Zora a companion cow.

Zep brings his cow Yolanda to Mrs. Falala's farm, and after initial nervousness, Zora accepts Yolanda as a companion.

Zep arrives at Mrs. Falala's visibly distressed and reveals that most of the Birchmere cows are raised for slaughter.

Zora bolts from the show ring at the fair and causes chaos as Reena, Zep, Beat, and Mr. Birch chase her through the fairgrounds.

Reena shows Zora in the breed judging competition at the fair and places fourth out of nine competitors.

Reena proposes to Mrs. Falala's attorney Mr. Colley that he buy Mrs. Falala's property and rent it to her family as caretakers.

Reena's family leaves behind their New York City lives after her parents lose their jobs at a newspaper, making the bold decision to move to coastal Maine. They settle in a small harbor town where they encounter an eccentric elderly neighbor, Mrs. Falala, whose stubborn cow Zora becomes the center of Reena's new world. Volunteered by her parents to help Mrs. Falala, Reena is challenged to shovel manure, learn cow care, and ultimately show Zora at a local fair. Along the way, Reena seeks help from teenage cow handlers Beat and Zep, solves Zora's loneliness by bringing in a companion cow, and confronts the reality of farm animals raised for meat. At the fair, Zora bolts dramatically from the ring before settling down enough to place fourth in the breed judging. When Mrs. Falala dies and leaves the family her animals, Reena devises a plan for her family to become caretakers of the farm, fully embracing her new Maine life.

The headline events of Reena's new life in Maine

The family packs up their New York apartment; future renters come to view it and the family notices how cramped and dark it is.

Reena's New York friends begin distancing themselves before the move, and Luke's best friend hits him upon hearing the family is leaving.

The family stops for lunch in a Maine town and finds a stranger has left a welcome note on their windshield.

After the first visit to Mrs. Falala's house, Luke draws her as a skeletal clawed monster surrounded by enormous pigs and cats.

Reena watches Beat and Zep expertly handle Belted Galloway cows at Birchmere Farm and rides away on her bike when they notice her.

Mrs. Falala calls Reena's parents to complain about Reena's rudeness, and Reena's father helps her understand that her tone was disrespectful.

Luke and Reena repeatedly protest returning to Mrs. Falala's house, but their mother firmly insists they have no choice.

The whole family goes to Mrs. Falala's barn; the children shovel manure while their parents drink lemonade in the cool kitchen inside.

Beat invites Reena and Luke to come to Birchmere Farm on free days so she and Zep can teach them about showing cows.

Zora knocks Luke down during a training visit, and Mrs. Falala greets their failure with unsympathetic sarcasm about their 'little Zora friend.'

During a thunderstorm, Reena and Luke shelter in Mrs. Falala's barn and huddle comfortably with Zora and Yolanda as the storm passes.

Reena and Zep spend a full day washing and grooming Zora before the fair; Zora immediately lies down in a mud puddle.

Zep wins third place in his fair division with Yolanda and singles Reena out with a nod from the show ring.

After the fair, Reena's family votes unanimously to wait until the next day before telling Mrs. Falala how Zora placed.

Reena and Luke wait anxiously at home while their parents leave to meet Mrs. Falala's attorney, Mr. Colley, at her house.

Before the family even reaches Maine, Reena witnesses the painful social cost of the move as New York friends pull away, including one who hits Luke simply for announcing the news. The family arrives to a warm welcome from strangers, and Reena becomes fascinated but intimidated by the confident local teenagers she sees working with enormous cows at Birchmere Farm. After Reena's rude confrontation with Mrs. Falala, the family works to smooth things over, and the children find themselves scrubbing manure in the barn while their parents drink lemonade inside. Over time, real friendships form with Beat and Zep, who invite Reena to train at Birchmere and slowly draw out her confidence around the animals. The days leading up to and at the county fair bring moments of preparation, pride, and vulnerability, as Reena watches Zep shine in his own class before taking Zora into the ring herself. After the fair ends, a family vote about visiting Mrs. Falala marks a small but tender moment of togetherness — and then an urgent call changes everything.

The moments that built Reena's journey from city girl to farm hand

Reena blurts out 'Maine!' when her parents discuss moving, and they enthusiastically embrace her suggestion as their new destination.

Luke spots the Belted Galloway cows and calls them 'Oreo cows'; a local girl standing with them corrects him.

Reena's mother visits Mrs. Falala alone and returns announcing the elderly woman was 'charming' and the children must start helping her tomorrow.

When Mrs. Falala mocks them for being afraid of the barn, Reena straightens her back and looks the old woman in the eye.

Mrs. Falala discovers Luke's drawings in his notebook and immediately demands that he sit down and teach her how to draw.

Reena visits Zora alone without a halter just to be friendly, and Zora follows her back to the pasture gate.

Reena tells Mrs. Falala that Zora is lonely and needs a companion cow; Mrs. Falala refuses to hear it and walks away.

Reena discovers photographs in the barn showing a young Mrs. Falala winning Grand Champion ribbons year after year with her Belted Galloways.

Zora moos as Reena and Luke turn to leave; Luke insists they go back, and Mrs. Falala finally agrees to let Yolanda visit.

Luke and Reena propose that the family become vegetarians after learning that most Birchmere cattle are raised for slaughter.

Mrs. Falala promises Zora will never be slaughtered for meat, and Zep tells the children they must accept that people eat beef.

During the anxious wait, Luke shows Reena Mrs. Falala's drawings and reveals the attic is her private 'remembering room.'

Reena notices the open attic window and suggests they search upstairs, where the group finds Mrs. Falala deceased on a cot, holding her flute.

The family finds Mrs. Falala's final drawings: Reena and Zora surrounded by blue ribbons, and Mrs. Falala waving goodbye to the children.

Six months later, Reena and her family live happily in Mrs. Falala's old house, and Reena vows to keep training Zora toward Grand Champion.

From the very beginning, Reena is the spark behind the family's journey — her offhand suggestion of Maine sets the whole adventure in motion, and her instinct to speak up for others repeatedly changes the course of events. A series of key revelations reshape her understanding of the people and animals around her, from recognizing Zora's deep loneliness to discovering that the stern Mrs. Falala was once a celebrated young cow champion. Small but pivotal moments — Reena visiting Zora without a halter just to be kind, Mrs. Falala spotting Luke's drawings and demanding lessons — show how trust and connection are built gradually through respect rather than force. The children's confrontation with the reality of beef farming forces an emotional reckoning, and Mrs. Falala's surprising promise about Zora's future offers unexpected comfort. The story's emotional climax arrives when Luke reveals the secret of Mrs. Falala's 'remembering room' and Reena leads the group upstairs to find the elderly woman peacefully gone, holding her flute — her final drawings revealing a love she never quite found the words to speak.
