Björn Diemel, a 42-year-old criminal defense lawyer in Germany, introduces himself as a man who has never been violent. He works at the prestigious law firm of Von Dresen, Erkel, and Dannwitz (DED), where his primary client is Dragan Sergowicz, a crime boss involved in drugs, arms dealing, and prostitution. Over the years, Björn has helped Dragan build a veneer of legitimacy through shell companies and fraud, but the work has eroded his ideals and strained his marriage to Katharina. Dragan's latest project, converting a townhouse into a luxury brothel, requires evicting tenants and a ground-floor preschool co-operative. Facing constant arguments, Katharina pressures Björn to attend mindfulness coaching or their marriage is over.

One Thursday in January, Björn arrives late to his first session with Joschka Breitner, a mindfulness coach who quickly observes that Björn cannot stand silence and lets external pressures dictate his life. Over subsequent sessions, Breitner teaches Björn breathing exercises, "time islands" (protected periods devoted solely to what nourishes you), and the idea that true freedom means not having to do what you do not want to do. Following Breitner's advice, Björn proposes a trial separation, moves into a nearby apartment, and creates dedicated time islands with his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Emily. Arguments between the couple drop to zero. Katharina attaches a firm condition: If Björn's job intrudes on his time with Emily, the relationship is finished and she will pursue sole custody.

On a Saturday in late April, Dragan calls with an emergency code word requiring an immediate meeting. He reveals that he beat Igor, the right-hand man of rival gang leader Boris, to death at a highway rest stop while approximately 50 schoolchildren filmed the attack. The videos went viral. Dragan demands Björn smuggle him out of the city in the trunk of Björn's Audi, threatening Björn and Emily, and declares Björn will serve as his representative to the organization's officers. Cornered, Björn agrees. He distracts Emily with ice cream while Dragan's assistant, Sasha, helps Dragan into the trunk, and they drive to a secluded lake house.

Emily hears knocking from the trunk and asks about it. Björn tells her it is "work" he left behind, and Emily instructs him that the trip comes first. Björn decides not to open the trunk. He and Emily spend the day on the jetty: eating nuts, feeding fish, swimming, and toasting marshmallows. The trunk temperature climbs to 139.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and Dragan dies of heatstroke. That evening, Björn reflects on the fairy tale Hans in Luck, recognizing that he has traded his freedom for obligations and that everything he received in exchange now lies in his trunk.

After another idyllic day on Sunday, Björn drops Emily with Katharina and returns to the lake house. Applying Breitner's technique of "intentional centering" (taking each step mindfully: defining its purpose, breathing once, and acting with calm resolve), he dismembers Dragan's body with workshop equipment and feeds the pieces through a wood chipper aimed at the lake. He preserves Dragan's right thumb in a silicone mold to forge future instructions. A magpie steals Dragan's ring finger, which carries a distinctive signet ring, creating an unresolved piece of evidence.

On Monday, Björn learns from Detective Chief Inspector Peter Egmann, an acquaintance from law school, that Murat, the deputy who tipped off Dragan about the rest stop, has been found shot dead. Björn realizes his weekend "digital fast" saved his life, since Murat's voicemail had requested a meeting at the same location. At DED, Björn negotiates a mutual termination with severance, taking Dragan as his independent client.

He meets Sasha, who is secretly a trained early childhood educator, and learns that Toni, the head of Dragan's narcotics division, likely orchestrated the rest stop as a trap to kill Dragan, blame Boris, and seize power. Using Dragan's plaster thumbprint, Björn forges instructions ordering the organization to abandon the brothel and take over the ground-floor preschool co-operative, Little Fish. This is the same preschool that Dragan's brothel would have displaced, and it previously rejected Emily's application, citing Björn's work for Dragan. Katharina has demanded that Björn fix the preschool situation or she will move away with Emily. Sasha accepts the forged orders and becomes head of the new childcare division.

To confirm Toni is behind the violence, Björn sends a misleading text identifying a false address as Dragan's hideout. Police intercept the text and attempt to storm the location, but a hand grenade detonates first, proving Toni has a corrupt source within law enforcement feeding him intercepted communications. Toni threatens Emily's life and gives Björn until the end of April to produce Dragan. Björn now faces three simultaneous deadlines: Katharina's demand for a preschool spot, Toni's ultimatum, and Boris's demand for retribution and a meeting with Dragan within six days.

Events accelerate. Björn's car is destroyed by one of Toni's grenade attacks. A captured hitman named Malte, Toni's nephew, confirms under interrogation that Toni ordered Murat's murder and that the police mole is Klaus Möller from Homicide Command. Björn and Sasha execute a hostile takeover of Little Fish, and Emily receives a preschool acceptance letter with Sasha installed as managing director.

At a pivotal officers' meeting held on children's chairs in the preschool, Björn reads forged instructions from "Dragan" promoting Sasha. Toni storms out, accusing Björn of killing Dragan, but Sasha defuses the crisis by claiming he spoke with Dragan that morning. Björn shows the remaining officers footage proving Toni's treachery, and they unanimously agree Toni must be eliminated.

The officers execute a coordinated plan to neutralize both Möller and Toni. They lure Möller into a compromising situation and blackmail him into making a fabricated call telling Toni that Malte is about to confess. Möller is then killed in a staged hit-and-run in Poland. Toni takes the bait, rushes to silence Malte, and is caught on camera killing the drugged, unconscious man. Björn locks Toni in the basement.

On Friday, Björn presents Katharina with two letters: a formal apology from the co-operative's founders and an acceptance letter offering Emily a spot at Little Fish. She is moved to tears. Peter visits the preschool, mentions the ring finger found at the lake, but admits there is no DNA sample for comparison. Wanting a spot for his own son, Peter effectively closes the investigation. Björn sets up his own law firm above the preschool.

At 3 A.M. Monday, Björn's officers deliver the bound Toni to Boris at the rest stop where Igor died. Boris kills Toni with hand grenades. Immediately afterward, Sasha crashes a store-bought drone bearing a fake "POLICE" sticker into the scene. Björn tells the panicked Boris that a police drone filmed the execution and he must hide immediately, offering to drive Boris to Dragan. Boris climbs into the trunk of his own Mercedes. Björn closes the lid, replicating the circumstances of Dragan's death, though Boris is destined for captivity in the preschool's basement.

All three ultimatums are met. Emily has her preschool spot, Toni is dead, and Boris has been neutralized. Björn has established his own law firm, freed himself from his toxic employer, and positioned himself as the de facto leader of Dragan's criminal organization, maintaining the fiction that Dragan is alive through forged instructions. Each mindfulness principle Breitner taught him has been repurposed to justify murder, conspiracy, and control.
