The war creeps closer when Continental soldiers threaten Father at the tavern, and Tim is forced to intervene to save him. Father is later captured by Rebel cowboys on a trading journey and ultimately dies on a British prison ship, leaving Tim and Mother to run the family business alone. British soldiers then attack Redding, burning homes and taking prisoners, while Sam arrives briefly with the Continental Army only to reenlist and leave again. Tim's hope for Sam's survival is crushed when Sam is framed for cattle theft by his own fellow soldiers and sentenced to death by General Putnam. The dangerous trading journey with its overnight warnings at the Platt house and successful cattle sale builds a false sense of security before the catastrophic journey home. Back in Redding, Tim and Mother quietly hold the family business together while a loyal minister is beaten for his beliefs and Mother fiercely shields Tim from being conscripted into the fighting. As Sam's execution looms, Betsy loses faith in the Patriot cause, Mother refuses to pray for the condemned, and Sam shares a final tender farewell with Tim, capturing the personal devastation behind the war's grand narrative.

This pool traces the key revelations and turning-point decisions that determine the fate of every member of the Meeker family. Tim's discovery of the stolen musket and his choice to stay silent set the pattern of difficult moral decisions that define his coming-of-age, while his failed letter errand for Mr. Heron reveals the war's dangerously blurred loyalties. His split-second decision to get the wagon home after reading the signs of Father's capture in the snow marks the night he became an adult, a transformation he later acknowledges in his own private reflection. The British soldiers' use of Mr. Heron's information exposes the murky allegiances at the heart of the conflict, and Tim gradually understands that Sam has chosen comradeship and excitement over family duty. Sam's unheeded warning about the cattle, the soldiers' brutal betrayal of him, and Colonel Parsons' grim revelation that innocence cannot save Sam confirm that justice has no place in wartime. The pool ends with the war's lasting damage made permanent: Mother broken and never fully recovered, and the surviving Meekers forced to rebuild their lives far from home.
