Philip Ashley grows up as the ward of his bachelor cousin Ambrose, who raises him in an isolated, all-male Cornish household far from the wider world. When Ambrose suddenly marries a widowed Italian contessa named Rachel, his letters home grow dark and paranoid before a final desperate note accuses her of destroying him. Philip travels to Florence and finds Ambrose dead, dismissed by a cold advisor named Rainaldi, and vows revenge against the woman he blames. Returning home as the estate's new master, Philip plans a confrontation but is completely disarmed by Rachel's quiet charm when she arrives to deliver Ambrose's belongings. As Philip's feelings transform from hatred to obsession, he gives Rachel the family pearls, then the entire estate, and believes their night together constitutes an engagement — a delusion shattered by her public humiliation of him. After suffering meningitis, Philip grows certain Rachel is poisoning him and watches her fall to her death in the sunken garden, dying with Ambrose's name on her lips.

Philip's story begins with the death of his parents in infancy, leaving him entirely shaped by Ambrose's solitary, woman-mistrusting world on the Cornish estate. When Ambrose dies in Italy, Philip journeys to Florence and finds only a shuttered villa and a forgotten hat — small, haunting relics of his guardian's life. Returning as master, Philip is caught off-guard by Rachel's practical competence and her immediate command of the estate's tenants and gardens, even as he secretly maneuvers to keep her financially dependent. His attempts to bind her to the estate — through a formal allowance and a secret legal deed drawn up by an outside attorney — reflect his growing desperation, while her cool acceptance of each gesture on her own terms underscores her autonomy. Rainaldi's week-long visit intensifies Philip's jealousy, and his violent reaction to Rachel's rejection leads to a collapse that she nurses him through, leaving him with a delusional belief they are married. By the time Philip watches Rainaldi secretly arrive at a local inn, confirming Rachel's hidden plans, the trust between them has been irreversibly destroyed.

The novel's key emotional reversals are driven by letters, symbolic objects, and sudden moments of clarity that rewrite Philip's understanding of Rachel at every turn. Ambrose's will reveals the constraints on Philip's power, while a Christmas confrontation — followed by Rachel's composed surrender of the pearl collar — exposes the gulf between Philip's romantic fantasy and social reality. The deaths of Don the dog and the disclosure of Ambrose's unsigned will force Philip to confront evidence he would rather suppress, just as the retrieval of the family jewels signals his final, reckless bid to possess Rachel entirely. His violent attack on Rachel and the shock of seeing Ambrose's face staring back from his own mirror mark the moment his psychological inheritance becomes fully realized. The closing sequence — Rachel's secret meetings with Rainaldi, the discovery of laburnum seeds, and the absence of any conclusive proof — ensures that the central question of her guilt or innocence remains permanently and deliberately unresolved.
