A teenager named Louisa sneaks into an art auction to see the one painting that has anchored her difficult life, setting in motion an unexpected chain of events. She meets the dying artist Kimkim in an alley, and his final wish is for Ted, his closest friend, to find Louisa and give her the famous painting. Ted and Louisa board a train together, and as they travel, Ted tells her the story of how the painting came to exist twenty-five years earlier, when four teenage friends pooled their loyalty and sacrifice to get Kimkim's art into a museum. The past and present storylines converge as Louisa learns the full depth of what the painting cost and what it represents, and she and Ted eventually arrive at Joar's home to hear the story's conclusion. The novel closes with a reverse heist as Louisa, Ted, Joar, and Christian's mother break into the hometown museum to return the painting to a place where it can be seen by everyone, honoring Kimkim's legacy and opening a new chapter for Louisa.

While the main plot follows the painting itself, a rich web of secondary events reveals the full texture of the world around it. In the past timeline, the four teenage friends forge their bond through shared poverty and danger, protecting one another through school bullying, parental neglect, and the desperate scramble to find money for art supplies. A pivotal secondary figure, the school janitor Christian, enters Kimkim's life as a creative mentor whose death and whose mother's influence ripple all the way into the present. In the present timeline, the train journey between Ted and Louisa is filled with secondary scenes — an embarrassing encounter with a conductor, a lost pair of ashes, and a midnight swim in the sea — that quietly transform two grieving strangers into something resembling family. The pool closes as Louisa ultimately fulfills the potential that Kimkim recognized in her, becoming a world-traveling artist who stays in contact with Ted, the surrogate father she never had.

Ted moves back to his hometown and takes a job teaching incarcerated young people, finding a new sense of purpose after years of grief and paralysis.

Louisa urges Ted to write a book about his life, and Ted is left wondering aloud: 'What would someone like me write a book about?'

Beneath the surface of the main narrative lie a series of turning points and revelations that reframe everything around them. In the past, small acts of protection — a knife passed between friends, a bicycle sold, a mother who took her son's weapon to use herself — reveal the desperate calculations made by young people trying to survive in a world of adult violence. A string of discoveries changes the course of each character's life: Kimkim finds a mentor in Christian, Joar's father is rendered helpless by a workplace accident, and a mother's secret plan goes unused. In the present, Ted and Louisa's bond is forged through shared crisis — a mugging, a rescue, and a lost pair of ashes — and deepened through the revelations Joar and Christian's mother deliver when they arrive in the hometown. The pool closes as the story comes full circle, with Ted finding new purpose as a teacher for incarcerated youth and Louisa urging him to write a book, prompting the novel's quietly meta final question.
