Harrison's carefully managed statement to police plants early misdirection, while Eden's frantic attempts to prove her identity—breaking into Spyglass and fleeing to The Manor—end in failure and Gabriella's brutal rejection. The investigation gains momentum through small discoveries: online photos Eden never uploaded, illegally painted bookcases, a body retrieved from the sand through a secret tunnel, and a room at The Manor wallpapered entirely with Gabriella's paintings of Spyglass. Personal entanglements complicate Birdy's authority when she learns Carter has hidden his marriage, and Carter's dinner-table theory that Mary and Eden are the same person finally cracks the case open. As Harrison eavesdrops and packs to flee, Birdy knocks Carter unconscious to protect him, Gabriella escapes from Harrison's car, and the conspiracy begins to unravel completely. The pool closes one year later, with Birdy's cancer in remission and a quiet life reclaimed at Spyglass.

Birdy's discovery of a Thanatos letter addressed to herself at Spyglass sets her on a collision course with the truth, while a night with Carter and the story of a grandmother who predicted her own death deepen her entanglement with Hope Falls. Eden's electric car dying on a dark road, and the appearance of a stranger's phone bearing a private phrase, mark the moment her fate is sealed. As the investigation deepens, Birdy is stunned to connect Harrison to Thanatos through a police transcript, Harrison secretly burns evidence and finds a warning written on his own mirror, and Carter discovers that Birdy's authority over him was never legitimate. The pool reaches its emotional core when Birdy confesses in the tunnel that Gabriella whispered the real truth about the accident, and when Harrison's own algorithm begins returning different death dates, exposing his empire as a lie. A skeleton bride standing over Birdy's unconscious body and Carter's desperate CPR bring the story to its crisis, while the revelation that Harrison has bought Smuggler's Inn for Carter's family delivers the conspiracy's final moral compromise.
