At eight, Brian Lackey is discovered bleeding beneath his house, unable to remember five hours, and eventually wonders whether aliens were responsible. Neil McCormick remembers that same summer differently: he believed he had found love and guidance in his baseball coach. Ten years later, Brian seeks answers while Neil, now a teenage hustler, follows an increasingly dangerous path.

Reviewers admire Heim’s command of multiple voices, believable and troubling characters, and assured treatment of difficult material. Kirkus calls the debut exquisitely written, disturbing, and unforgettable, while Publishers Weekly praises scenes of genuine beauty. Criticism centers on the novel’s relatively static narrative, occasional writing lapses, and characters who linger after serving their purpose. Another reviewer finds the characterization mostly deft but questions the narrators’ vocabulary, notes an inconsistent character, and says suspense is not among Heim’s strengths.
This is best suited to mature readers drawn to challenging literary fiction about abuse and its lasting effects, especially stories centered on memory, survival, friendship, and truth. Readers who value multiple narrative voices and carefully differentiated characters may find its construction especially rewarding. Expect an emotionally demanding experience rather than a gentle coming-of-age story: the material is disturbing, but critics also praise the novel as worthwhile and exquisitely written. Readers sensitive to depictions of childhood sexual abuse should approach with caution.
