Pool 1 covers the foundational moments of Alex MacDonald's life and his extended clan, beginning with the ancestor Calum Ruadh's sea crossing from Scotland to Cape Breton. The death of Alex's parents on the ice shapes him and his siblings profoundly, scattering the family into different living arrangements. Years later, after Alex graduates, the violent death of his cousin at a uranium mine draws him back into his brothers' world. At the mine, a long-festering feud between Calum and a French Canadian man culminates in a fatal brawl that destroys Calum's life and shatters the clan. The aftermath sees Alex's grandparents age and die one by one, with Grandma outlasting them all but losing her mind to dementia. Characters are revealed through memorable episodes: Grandpa's drunken Christmas homecoming, the new lighthouse keeper's brutal act against the family dog, and a grandfather's quiet vigil over a found purse. Calum's makeshift dentistry with a horse and the story of Grandpa braving a storm with hay illuminate the rugged world Alex's brothers inhabit. The pool closes with the discovery in Alexander MacDonald's locker — a revelation that exposes the betrayal at the heart of the clan's destruction.

At the mine, an unlikely cross-cultural friendship forms alongside festering suspicion, and a fateful road trip to collect a cousin sets irreversible events in motion.
